My prediction for Clemson/Georgia
Aug 3, 2013, 1:13 PM
|
|
It will be obvious that Georgia has 10 returning starters on offense and Clemson's defense, though improved, will still have a ways to go to be ready for such an offense. Georgia will be able to run or throw throughout the day. We will have a hard time getting them off the field as they will choose to run more often than you think.
Clemson's offense will be one of the best in school history, but true to our history, it will take a little while to get cranking. Add to that the fact that Georgia's offense will do a good job of keeping our offense off the field and opportunities will be limited down the stretch.
Georgia has lost a lot of talent on defense, but will have a defense at least as good as ours and will have more success at stopping our offense than our defense will have with their offense because our offensive line will not be as strong as Georgia's and we will not have near the running game.
Remember we had 13 points vs LSU in the fourth quarter and 17 vs South Carolina at game's end. So it is not a given that our offense scores a lot of points, particularly against a team with a similar talent level.
Final Score: Georgia 42 Clemson 20
I believe Georgia has blown out Nebraska, Auburn, Florida and the like in recent outings.
We will rebound to finish 9-3 with additional losses to Florida State and South Carolina. We win the bowl game and finish 10-3 and ranked #14 in the nation. This will be our third straight season with double digit wins.

No, we need the writer to be sure and take his meds every day like the doctor told him. Clemson will run it up on this weak defense and win 49-17 in a romp!! Take it to the bank.

wow, according to you we don't do well in any of the 3 big games. dabo and company really need to beat sc and get this in state thing turned around to help recruiting. I also hope we can win the acc, as we have only won it once since 1999. your plan for Georgia is well thought out but I believe their d will not be very good. I think they will struggle to cover our receivers. we need to get ahead early and not turn the ball over. I do agree with your points about running the ball and keeping it away from us. but I see tigers winning 31-28.

start the season is not a bad call. Unfortunately, we have two teams on our schedule (Georgia and SC) that are higher than 8th ranked and I believe that is accurate also. I guess I think FSU will upset us. I do think the FSU game is the one of the three we could very well win. If we don't go 10-3 as I said with losses to GA, SC and FSU, then we will beat FSU and 10-2 reg. season and go to the ACCCG. If that happens we could finish 1-4,11-3 or 12-2 depending on the champ. game and bowl. But I do believe we come up short against Georgia and South Carolina this year.

Your scenario seems much more of a possibility than his. We beat a great LSU team that was at least as good as ugay from a talent standpoint. I believe the NFL draft said a lot about their talent. Although I don't remember the specific numbers drafted from each team and their selection rounds, I believe LSU was well represented in the draft.

have in my head a totally different picture of what the Georgia offense did to Bama in that game. I would like to see the passing stats because I just seem to remember neither team being able to stop the other. I would actually like to see a replay of that game. They show some games over and over, but don't seem to show that one very often. I might check the computer for it.
Thanks for the rushing stats.

You subtract the rushing yards from the total yards, and you get passing yards.

ton's more talent and experience (as a unit). look at the (now in the nfl) names uga lost, jenkins, rambo,et al, you just don't plug in new guys in game 1 and expect the same results, even given the fact that their d wasn't "all that" last year. our d wasn't the best, but we were a younger unit (except in the secondary), in year 1 under new dc, bv. we are now moving into yr.2, with the guys aged (physically and mentally) an additional yr., and we added TALENT in the secondary ( even a uga doesn't just add an m.a., top 5 player over-all type talent every day), along with moving blanks ( a potential all-american) into the back-4. please explain how you can say that side of the ball is a wash.

You may be in that group of fans who still longs for the return of Danny and is pessimistic when it comes to us being a good team. Wake up dude. They just beat an LSU team that Georgia hardly ever beats. No way Uga beats up on this team like that. You think a bunch of talented freshmen are gonna slow the offense down? That's nuts. Our experience and knowledge of the offense will catch them out of position so much that it will be funny. Our front 7 will get stops, not every time but enough to do the job.

It does look like I am buying into the SEC hype machine but
Aug 3, 2013, 2:53 PM
|
|
I actually don't. I know the SEC has teams like Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky, Miss. State, Tennessee, Missouri, teams that are average to flat out bad. Ole Miss and Vandy, while trending up, are not much more than average either. That accounts for 8 not very special teams and I'm not sure Florida doesn't make it nine when you think of the Louisville beat down.
But the problem is we play two of the top tier teams in the SEC this year. I'm not a believer in GA and SC because they are SEC, but because they are legit top-7 teams in the oountry. Someone said the other day that Clemson has a tougher SEC schedule than Alabama. I know that was tongue in cheek, but not by much.
If we were playing Auburn, or any of the other eight or nine average SEC teams in the UGA or SC spot, I'd love our chances.

Their offense is going to be really good, but so is ours. And you can't say enough about experience on defense. They have a lot of new starters, I'm sure with some experience, but our defense has more of it and will most definitely surprise a lot of people.
Your score prediction, while possible because you can't rule much out in CFB, is very unlikely.
And maybe you should show up to the game in a red jersey.

LSU 2012 defense was better than UGA will be 2013
Aug 3, 2013, 2:46 PM
|
|
I don't know why you have such confidence that Richt and Grantham will be more effective at building a nearly new defense from scratch versus Swinney and Venables will be improving on ours with a mix of seasoned as well as newer talent Venables targeted. This is the year Venables gets to prove he either built up the program and wins or missed. My money is on the fact that we will be effective but not Alabama effective against UGA offense.
But our offense will likely hammer the newbie UGA defense, especially if we no-huddle a lot. It will be hard for new defensive players to keep up with reads, etc. when fast paced. We will simply have to outscore our defense. But that is not new.
And remember, Murray had a slow start last year, too. Part of that was due to having played so many weak teams early. They almost got beat by Tennessee for chrissake. The 2012 Vols no less!
No reason to expect Murray will come out of the gate any more dominant than before, although it could happen.

Aug 3, 2013, 2:57 PM

you asked in the first paragraph of your post, I think the reason is that GA defense has been strong and we are still recovering from that 2011 defense in which the bottom fell out. I do think we have come a long ways since Steele left town, but just not sure we are all the way back and UGA offense will be among, if not, the best in the nation.

And the LSU's defense did enough to beat Clemson. With as poorly conditioned as they were they still held your offense to 25 points.
Had Mettenburg completed a simple pass to a wide open player lsu wins and holds you to 22 points.
LSU's offense is what lost them the peach bowl.
And yes UGA lost a lot of players to the NFL, however they are replacing them with a bunch of players who will one day play in the NFL.

If the LSU defense had done enough to beat us, they
Aug 3, 2013, 3:30 PM
|
|
would have had more points at the end of the game due to holding us to less points. LSU received a gift fumble at the first of the game and drove 20 yards for 7 points. LSU got another gift fumble from Ellington in the third quarter inside the 28 yard line. They turned that into 3 points. LSU is lucky they had more than 14 points at game's end.
Now, LSU's defense did do enough to beat you guys as evidenced by the fact that you had less points than LSU at the end of the game.
LSU's defense was whipped in the fourth quarter. Clemson had 179 yards to LSU's 1 yard. If that were reversed you'd be saying the SEC team wore Clemson down, or was used to tougher battles and coming through in the end.
Truth be known, the only thing that stopped Clemson from scoring another touchdown in the fourth quarter is the clock running out. Clemson had a 1st and 10 at the LSU 17 when we purposely ran back two yards to center the ball. Then we kicked a field goal on 3rd down. Had the clock not been running down, LSU would have been driven right on through the endzone for touchdown. That is if they were able to stop cramping long enough to finish the game.
AS for LSU not being able to complete a pass. He passed on 1st down for 8 yards and it was 2nd and 2. Why didn't he run it? He had been stuffed on short runs all night long. He blew the 2nd down pass, but hey that happens. Ask us about Miami 2005. On 3rd down, not wanting to get stuffed again, he throws and the rush is strong and the ball is batted slapped back down by Goodman.
We outscored LSU 12-0 in the fourth quarter and out-yardaged them 179 to 1. If the clock hadn't been running out there is no down we'd have gone 17 more yards and the yardage would have been 196 to 1 and score 16-0 in fourth quarter.
Like I said, LSU was two gifts away from ending up with 14 points. Two Clemson fumbles inside the 20 and the 27. Clemson missed an extra point and had to chase it causing the loss of another point by having to try for the two point conversion.

just pointed out the fourth to remind the coot that we won going away even though it was a 1 point walk-off field goal win. We were 1st and 10 at the 17 when we began setting up for field goal. We rolled up offensive yards all night long as you say. Two great touchdown drives in the first quarter and other drives that didn't result in scores.
LSU offense had 8 three and outs. They had three and outs when they were trying to run it for short yardage and were stuffed. Everyone was saying they were too conservative and then at the end they try to throw it and get sacked in the next to last possession and incomplete and batted down in the last possession. At least they weren't conservative, or everyone would have been crying about that. Either way, run or pass, they kept coming away with three and outs.

What are you talking about with "the pass was batted down?"
Mettenburger just missed a wide open throw. If he completes the throw then LSU wins. Which then would mean their defense played well enough to win.

said, he, it happens. On 3rd and 2, he went back to throw again and during a heavy Clemson rush, Maliciah Goodman slapped the ball down at the line. He palmed it as a matter of fact. LSU had three downs you know before they punted.

"the defense did not play well enough to win because they lost the game."
Do you honestly not realize how nonsensical this argument is?
You're arguing that the defense is responsible for offensive production and vice versa.
If a team wins a game without the offense scoring a point, Would you argue the offense played well?

By the way, IF your defender gets called for the OBVIOUS pass interference, then you lose to VANDY.
See how easy that is?

I'm not the one pretending our offense was unstoppable in the Vanderbilt game like you guys are in the LSU game.

Nice job admitting you wandered off topic too. Typical.

give up over 180 yards in the 4th quarter and over 450 for the game. They also gave up 25 points. We got no gifts like LSU did on offense. Yes, Mettenberger missed a pass. I'm sure Boyd had one overthrown pass during the game.
Good luck in someday finally beating Auburn or LSU. I hear it has been decades.
I have a questions for you. They used to ask how long Clemson would retain Tommy Bowden if he didn't win an ACC title. How long will South Carolina let Steve Spurrier go without an SEC title? Is it just understood that two Hall of Fame coaches, Spurrier and Holtz is supposed to equal zero SEC titles. SEC, SEC!!!!

LSU's defense didn't play well in the fourth quarter. They needed their offense to do its job and put points on the board and maintain possession to keep your offense off the field.
That doesn't change the fact they played well enough to win. It shows an elementary understanding of the game to argue an offense or defense is responsible for the other.
Secondly, only once in the Spurrier era has the SEC Champion not won or played another team SEC team in the national championship. That was in his very first season and he nearly made it to Atlanta that year.
Spurrier can stay as long as he wants if he keeps us a top ten program in the county.

back in their face by Goodman. And, in case you didn't notice the defense did not play well enough to win because they lost the game. The LSU defense played well enough to win in their game against South Carolina. They needed to hold you to 22 points or less and they held you to 21. That is playing well enough to win.

Poorly conditioned? Is that the new excuse these days?
30+ first downs and almost 450 yards of offense didn't happen all of a sudden, although we really pushed LSU around in the 4th. A smarter person would argue that they were effective for 3 quarters at stopping scoring, but not at stopping the offense. They came out of the gate not able to deal with the offense and it had little to do with conditioning.
And I'm not buying the bridge your selling that LSU, after a full season and time off plus time to prepare for a bowl game is less "conditioned" than UGA will be in the very first game of the season. Nice try, though.

gave Clemson credit on a CLEMSON Website.
if - If IF
LSU's defense IS BETTER than UGA's last year and a sane person would say the first game of this year, since UGA lost so many players from the team last year.
Look at the statistics over the season and get back to me.
Heck - if you looked at your game against LSU and your game with UGA - you would say the LSU's offense is better than UGA's last year.

Georgia Sucks
Aug 3, 2013, 3:38 PM

Their Amazing offense Avg just over 460 yd/gm.
Our offense averages 512 yds/gm and will be better this year. Adv - Clemson
Their Defense was 32nd overall last year and they lost like 9 starters and have two key pieces out for the Clemson Game.
Our Defense returns most of the key pieces and is improving. Adv - Clemson
Georgia always blows it in big games and they will place more intensity on beating SEC opponents than they will on beating Clemson as they firmly believe that a one loss SEC team still goes to Pasadena - Adv. Clemson
The only good thing about Georgia is their good looking women. But Clemson still wins in that category as well...
Go Tigers.
Overall, I think we win because of Home Field, and UGA will look at this more like a warm up for SEC play.
Plus they won't take Clemson seriously.
Plus Year 3 in the same offense? Its going to be off the chain!

YouTube is your friend!!
Simply search for "2012 SEC, blah blah".
Side note: Ga did not dominate against Bama OR vice versa. That being said, Jawja is not going to dominate Clemson either.
You can be as gung ho "SEC" all you want, but Jawja is playing CLEMSON and not "just another ACC team".
Tweet that and...
Go Tigers!!!

win by 22 though. Hopefully we will win one of the FSU/SC games, but I think we slip somewhere else to end up 9-3 like you said. I'll believe what I am hearing about our O-line when I see it. Still think we have S&C issues compared to elite teams.

It will not be a blow out either way. Clemson/Ga historically have been hard fought battles and this one won't be any different. Most everything will depend on Tajh being on balance and that we have good pass protection. I feel like we can stay in there on the run.
