Clarification on hiring coordinators

Dec 26, 2022, 3:02 PM

While it is factually accurate that Dabo has not hired outside the program since BV, it’s a little disingenuous to to use that to make a point when it’s kind of hard to hire outside the program when the hire was such a home run that BV only left last year.

Dabo let Vic know in no uncertain terms that his services would not be needed after his interim stint and Steele had no chain after 2 years and a WV beat down

The OCs are not a lot different. The mad scientist was shown the door after the interim stint Dabo made what I think was and has proven to be a decent in house hire with Napier He was a good recruiter and Dabo wants some continuity. After two years, it was evident we needed a change, so Dabo hired the Chad. This was followed by Jeff and Tony, and then by Tony. Finally, Streeter has had a year.

Dabo hires, trains, and promotes so he doesn’t have to hire from outside our program and culture, but he’s proven he will when necessary
I think it is clear that Dabo will make any necessary changes and won’t put up with mediocrity for an extended period of time like many programs allow

I’ll trust Dabo on this one

Robbie Caldwell and Danny Pearman.

I may not have been clear.

I was only listing Offensive and Defensive Coordinators.

Robbie Caldwell and Danny Pearman.

Early on when these men were hired, Dabo had not established his coaching tree so he had to go outside the family to get the coaches he needed for success.

I totally agree! Hard to argue with the success he has had.

If we win and recruit, I don't care if the coaches come from Mars.

The mad scientist was canned before Dabo coached that first

interim game against gt and koenning could have come back but didn’t want to because he felt he should have been chosen as interim coach and didn’t want to work for Dabo.

After the Orange Bowl, we will know.

Dec 26, 2022, 7:59 PM

I read message boards from several teams. Fans who post on message boards share some common traits, one of which is recency bias.

1. If Clemson wins 38-0, Dabo is a genius. The coordinators have learned and grown and Dabo was incredibly gifted with insight and discernment in promoting from within. Clemson will probably go on a 40 game winning streak and win back to back national championships.

2. If TN win, Dabo is an idiot. He destroyed the program by promoting two unqualified assistants into positions way over their heads. Clemson will be lucky to make it to a bowl game next year.

Disclaimer: This is not directed specifically at any poster here or even singling out Clemson. The same sentiment can be found on a Bama or an Ohio State or Michigan or an FSU or an Oklahoma or.... board. Coaches are only as good as their last game.

Spot on Brett. This and stubbornly insisting on starting the 3rd best QB on the team. Just saying.

Nah, the entire thing hinged mainly on the QB, which Dabo proved he waited too long on. (Still love Dabo). His coordinator hires have been ok when hiring from within, his hires from outside have been slam dunk. I don't think there's zero issue with coordinators today, but I do think QB was 90% of the problem. The difference in 10-2 and ACC championship and 11-1 or 12-0 and a playoff berth, which everyone is happy with regardless of outcome, is the QB. I think its almost a waste of time to debate coordinator hires. The whole season I thought it was Streeter also but it clearly was mainly QB.

Had we not turned the ball over against the coots we would also likely be 11-1 regardless of the QB.

One of those TO might not have happened

Dec 27, 2022, 8:01 AM

but no one can predict what would have happened had Cade gone in earlier.

Cade is clearly a better QB, in my opinion, but let's see how he does as the starter.

I think you are right about the knee jerk reaction after the Orange Bowl but I don’t think a fair decision can be made on the OC until after more games with a different QB. I will be curious to see the comments this time next year. As much as I supported DJ and the coach’s decisions, DJ’s performance just wasn’t what it needed to be. If the offensive performance doesn’t improve next year with the same OC then we have identified another issue.

In manufacturing we always tried to identify bottlenecks to production efficiency and eliminate them. When you eliminate one bottleneck, the next one becomes more easily identified. I believe DJ’s performance was a bottleneck for this offense. Now that has been removed from the equation and if the offense doesn’t improve the next bottleneck should be easier to identify.
