Clemson as Independent?
Dec 2, 2023, 9:27 AM

Wanted to get thoughts on possibility if only for a few years. Neff says that Clemson is well positioned and Larry Williams has been reporting the same over the last few months.
There hasn’t been anything confirming a path to Big Ten or Sec just yet. Reports have been that Clemson is linked up with Fsu, but the latest reports a few weeks ago suggested Unc and fsu had funding approval to go to Big Ten. Sec has been fairly quiet.
What if Clemson has assurances on a tv deal as independent and that is reason for confidence.
Hypothetically they could have annually rivalry games aligned with FSU, SC, UGA, ND, and Georgia Tech. Clemson would probably only schedule that type of slate in a 12 team playoff era, which is here now.
I haven’t seen any rumors suggesting this, but wondering if this would be a temporary move until time is right to join one of the top conferences?

Totally agree. We’re not Notre Dame.
It really suxcksz that the NCAA is super messed up.
I’m not sure if CFB will ever be right sized.

Agree it’s a big risk, would need the alliances with other schools and tv deal to make sense.

College football, as we know it, is gone! Likely to never return. The lust for money is the root of all evil. First Timothy for all you scholars but there is some truth to that statement. Our tv friends have contributed to the cause too. The games will go on as always but the rich get richer and our teams may not be among them.
I truly believe that the NCAA dropped the ball in their efforts to “improve the game”.

Speaking of death penalty, commercial T V has already sentenced college FB to the D E A T H Penalty, and the TV networks are not concerned bc they will move on to the next best thing for commercial advertisement, it has become the way of the world. For the ones that refuse to believe that, you are holding onto something that is impossible to grip. 10 to 20 years from right now, college FB will fizzle out and it can't be stopped bc deep pockets won't allow it to be stopped...

How do you figure we manage games against Florida State and Georgia Tech? The ACC is still going to schedule 8-9 conference games for its members. We'd be trying to force these games into the first three weekends, and most teams are looking for tune-up games then. Same goes for Georgia, although we have been known to open the season with them (and will in 2024). And we're assuming that we'll keep the season finale against USuC.
Notre Dame is the only team with any flexibility. What are we going to do with the other seven weeks? Service academies? FCS schools? Assuming they have openings, and we schedule programs like Liberty and Coastal, we could get embarrassed and lose all shot at a playoff anyway. I'd rather stick to UNC, Wake, UVa, etc.

You have a great imagination.
Clemson isn't going independent for the same reason the two Super Conferences are an inevitably...money.
Eventually, we're probably going to end up in the SEC. Either way, we'll end up leaving the ACC and joining a super conference.

You can't join a club when the club rulers don't see any value you can bring into the club besides just being a good FB team that can pack a stadium bc that means nothing when they are packing way more TV's than a stadium has seats!!!

With all of the conference expansions, I doubt that any team will have open slots on their schedule for independent teams (other than Notre Dame.)

Would totally kill other sports like Basketball. Baseball, Softball etc. Would have the Notre Dame problem of parking those sports somewhere -probably "The American" or Conference USA.

Problem is who are you going to play as a independent? If a bunch of teams were to go independent you could play them. Clemson will be in a conference, which one is the question.

We'd need to undo our GOR to be able to commit to a network.

Imo, there's not a network out there that is going to televise all of Clemson's games. We ain't ND.

Heard from a higher up in University that Duke has actually become a player for a Big Ten spot. Got the rich alumni to buy out of ACC and academics align with Big Ten plus Basketball is pretty big up there

The solution is to have one nationwide NFL format league. The league is the franchisor. The universities are the franchisees.
Eat what you kill playoff format. No polls.
Include all power five teams. Maybe find a way to include some Grupo five teams.
I know most of us don’t like unions, but we need some sort of format and structure for labor. Current format is not sustainable and will not be in existence a few years from now. Need to have some uniformity in compensation, not necessarily uniformity in the dollar amount, but uniformity / parameters / norms in terms of timing, commitment, benefits, renewals, salary, bonus, guaranteed, incentive, tampering, etc.

All good points, was just a thought and makes sense that scheduling and other sports would be a challenge.
Viztiz really likes to berate people that don’t post as often as he does. Nice high quality post of yours by criticizing others.
In any case, I want the tigers to do well regardless of how frequently I post.

Any one who has followed college football more than say, a minute, would understand that being an independent has been the death knell for most programs - like say, South Carolina. Notre Dame is the only brand that has and can pull it off. I don’t care that you don’t post much. I don’t understand why, if you choose to, why you’d post something this stupid that belies absolutely no understanding of the sport or the landscape around it.

Clemson is contractually tied to the ACC until 2036.
It will be a big lawsuit to leave before then
