Clemson MUST improve with Special Team play!!

Saying, while Notre Dame is ranked Top 10 for their ST play..our Tigers are not in top 84 rankings and LAST per the FPI.

Seems to be a problem more than not every year.

Who is in charge of our ST’s?!

Mike Reed coaches our special teams. I like Mike Reed overall as a coach and a recruiter. I think he does a really good job with the DBs. I do not think he is impacting special teams based on performance and production the last few years.

Kicking has turned into a major issue this year. We never seem to get significant return yardage on punts or kickoffs. Opposing punters can be averaging 39 yards per kick on the year until they play us at which time they average 53 yards per punt. We rarely block any kicks or punts which are all plays that can positively turn a game in our favor.

Reed & Speirs

It's a really good point. It the offense didn't stink so bad, we would all be griping about special teams

Obviously the field goal kicking team has been rancid. Looks like they fixed the protection issues early, but “we got who we got” there at kicker I guess.

We've been pretty solid punting and limiting big returns. Maybe it's hang time or maybe it's speed, but we aren't getting to balls at the goal line. Seems like every other team catches a ball on the one or two yard line vs us.

Which brings me to my real beef. Our punt return game sucks this year. We don't block well and we are sending bench warmers back there to catch the ball who have no speed or hope of making a return of more than a yard. The punt return game needs major work!

We need to find a good kicker and Id love to see us get aggressive

Our special teams philosophy has always seemed to be very conservative, especially on punt returns. I think the main emphasis is just not to make a mistake and turn the ball over ....... thus all of the fair catches.

Yes...and we refuse to pressure the punter or attempt a punt block....

Typically a guy "rushes" from the edge and simply stops...not going towards the punter or even engaging the blocker, who then can go downfield. Just kind of hangs out there.
Meanwhile, we're sending people "back", I guess....but somehow the punt returner usually ends up with a defender right in his grill. If that's the case, we might as well try to block the punt, or get some pressure on the punter, at least occasionally, especially if they are backed up. It's not like we are actually setting up a return.

I do believe losing A. Williams limits the punt return game. That's why it's frustrating that we don't ever attempt a block. Blocks require really good film study and timing...but when you have a team that doesn't score, you look for other ways.
