Clemson vs Georgia Rivalry

Aug 4, 2016, 10:11 AM

Can someone explain why 40 of the games were played in Georgia versus only 24 in South Carolina? I have wondered this for sometime but have never been able to find the answer.

Clemson was the "fledgling" program back in the day and if

Aug 4, 2016, 10:16 AM

they wanted a shot at some of the bigger programs in the southeast, say UGA/GT, they went on the road. The exposure in Georgia as a whole and Atlanta specifically was welcomed and needed.

It's worked out.

to the clemson program. that game had a national audience. i miss that rivalry and never missed a clemson/uga game - although some i wish i hadn't been there.

I for one am glad you are stopping. You are one of the most ignorant posters ever. You obviously think very highly of your own opinion, unlike the rest of us - RockHillTiger

Same reason we played so many at GTech...

Back in the day, those were bigger stadiums and more high-powered non-conference opponents. So more money came to Clemson for the road games.

By the late 70s, Death Valley was expanded. When GTech became a conference foe, home and home was asssured. When we began insisting on home-and-home with the Dawgs, they got skert.

Money!!!!

Aug 4, 2016, 10:28 AM

We made very little playing at home compared to playing away at Ga., and Ga.Tech. I remember Frank Howard stating that Ga tech paid us $100,000 to play in Atlanta. a lot of moola for back then!!!!

Clemson only played about 3 home games a year

Aug 4, 2016, 10:30 AM

until the ACC was formed.

We almost ALWAYS had to go to UGA, Auburn, etc twice or more to get them to come to Clemson once.

Clemson wasn't really regarded as a "major" school back then. Example: Went undefeated (11-0) in 1948, but went to Gator Bowl and finished 11th in the AP poll.
