Clemson vs PC football games in the 1950's

Jul 29, 2022, 3:34 PM

Any of you older folks attend any PC games in the 1950's? My dad worked on Saturdays so I didn't get to go to Clemson football games until I had a drivers license which I got the day I turned 14. Anyway I still remember several things about the 1955 &56 games. The games were played around Sept 20th and they were night games. It was also cold. I wore a heavy coat and with general admission of $.25 I sat in the North stands. Several people even built fires to stay warn.
I remember that Clemson won both games and I do not remember PC even scoring. The lighting was not great but the footballs were easy to see as they were white. Anyone else remember that?
Those were the good ole days

My first experience with Clemson football was when my Dad took me to an opening game with PC in 1956. I was 12 at the time.

Grandpatiger. Do you remember the program? I've attached a scan of the 55 & 56 program covers. I have saved them all these years and they are almost like new.

Now here is some Clemson history I had no idea existed.

How was the playing field lighted, since there were no permanent lights?

I think I saw that the NC State game that year also had an 8:00 pm start time. I surely would have lost a bet, because I thought the first night game was during the Danny Ford era, when ABC brought in portable light stands to be able to have a night game in Death Valley.

76er. The lighting was done via trucks with flood lights loaded on the back. I know that there was one on each corner of the North & South stands. No upper decks at this point. There may have been more trucks at mid-field but I don't remember and it was over 65 years ago. What I have wondered for years is where did the power come from. Were there batteries on each truck or was cable run to each truck. Maybe a history buff can let us know about that.

Yep. Remember all that just as you describe.
