Compensating collegiate athletes

Jun 22, 2014, 1:11 PM

Just watched John Saunders say on espn that collegiate athletes will get paid at some point. Is he delusional? Does he not realize that most collegiate athletes go to school for FREE? That's $200k in compensation IMO. The espn propaganda machine is in sixth gear.

What if we just take away everything that is offered right

now like tuition, room and board, meal plans, coaching, medical insurance and give them $50,000 each year and let them pay for everything...they'll probably wind up in the hole.

However, couldn't players that are well known and get national attention market themselves on products and such like Watkins or Clowney allowing them even more income?

This whole thing sounds like a giant mess...

They would blow it on tattoos and cars.

What ever happened to "school spirit" and "for the love of the game"? I'll tell you, espn.

This is all my fault.

I didn't beat the hail out of my children (your parent's generation) and make them work for a living.

Actually, I did but most of the hippies of the 1950/60's wanted to change the world. This is exactly what they've done.

This is a very slippery slope

and one that can not be reversed once we go down it. It will eventually lead to the end of college football as we know it. College sports was never intended to be what it has turned into. There are so many schools that will have to drop football and possibly all sports due to this. What these guys need to do is approach the NFL about starting their own minor league and quit using the colleges as such. This doesn't end with paying football players. Colleges will have to pay all athletes remember title IX. Sure there are some Universities who could provide some financial benefits to all athletes but very few.

At this point I doubt we will see the college paying

the players. I would imagine the NCAA will try to get around that by just allowing the athletes themselves to market their images.

That way the football and basketball players can get what the boosters want to give them and the school won't be legally obligated to give the volleyball players a stipend as well.
