John Swofford was (still is?) a crook.
He committed multiple financial crimes and fraud against the teams (universities) of the ACC.
It's his fault that the ACC is locked into the terrible ESPN deal for another decade plus.
He got the ACC into this position by positioning Raycom Sports (his wife's brother's business that also hired his son) to get first choice of ACC sports games, with ESPN getting second choice. ESPN did not want to be second in line.
Later, when he wanted to start the ACC Network with ESPN, they remembered his previous put-down, didn't want to start the ACC Network, and low-balled their ACC offer. Then he sold the schools on taking this bad deal, that he had created. Could he have negotiated a better deal with CBS, ABC, etc.? Did he try?
Then he went to the NCAA offices, with the UNCheaters, and (reportedly) bribed them (with reportedly $1.6M dollars) to keep the NCAA from giving the "death penalty" to the UNCheaters for their 20-plus years of academic and athletic cheating via the specially-created Department of Afro-American Studies, AAS. (The UNCheaters used the AAS Department to keep a lot of their athletes academically eligible, while allowing them to skip all but the first AAS class of each semester and by paying staff and other paid students to write papers for the AAS student-athletes.) UNCheat almost lost their academic certification and was placed on academic probation by the Southern Association of Schools. And the NCAA did almost nothing to the UNCheaters.
It's my understanding that coach Dean Smith and Swofford (the Athletic Director when AAS was started) were well aware of the cheating. And the other coaches had to know.
So, IMHO, he's a crook and they are the UNCheaters.
