Culture matters.

We are seeing it at Clemson where many guys are coming back for one more year rather than heading to the NFL.

There are a lot of factors involved.

How much they enjoy, or don't enjoy, school.
Have they graduated? Is that a goal?
How much money can I make from NIL.
Culture.

I'm not gonna try and prioritize them. They probably vary with individuals.

But, if the kid doesn't like the culture. If he doesn't enjoy the lifestyle - the other players, the coaches, the training staff, the food, benefits in the athletic complex (TVs, video games, etc.), then it will be harder to keep him at school and easier for him to decide it's time to move on.

Clemson has the culture. It is obvious by the number of kids who might project as a day 2 or day 3 draft pick decided to come back. Dabo has built that culture.

Note: My motivation for posting this at this particular time is I just heard that Jared Verse has decided to come back for another year at FSU. Whatever Norvell is doing, he's convincing the kids that it is working. Those who are all staying (Jordan Travis, Trey Benson, Johnny Wilson, et. al.) are all mentioning him by name in there twitter or instagram or other public statements about rhe reason they are coming back.) Norvell ain't Dabo. Not by a long shot. But, he is certainly building a culture where the players enjoy it and respect him.

Now if Miami, Va.tech, and a few others could figure this out the Acc would be a force.

I certainly agree with your post and it is very apparent that the RIGHT coach is irreplaceable. Some have one (Clemson does) some are building one (usocar) and some never will(long list).

The best way for our Tigers to be recognized by all is to beat the good programs. The ACC needs to improve and I think that they are.

@bretfsu great read as always. Whenever you are ready to leave the dark side we would be more than happy to call you a “Clemson Man”

them back to prominence. I’ve always liked FSU. I like the school, I like the location, I like the people there. It is my second fav campus after Clemson.

I visited Virginia and BC this summer while traveling up and down the east coast and I have to say those are some pretty places too. Even though I am a Clemson alum and native, I can appreciate other school campi.

A thought about Norvell.

He appears to be the real deal. But, FSU fans need to be careful. Some are already saying if we don't win the ACC and make it to the playoffs next year will be a bust.

Fans need to understand it's hard to climb the mountain to the summit. But, it's a lot harder to stay there. Success is great. But, to way too many fans, success gives birth to entitlement.

We're all hoping that Norvell didn't catch lightening in a bottle with Jordan Travis. We're hoping he can build and maintain a top flight program. Things are looking good right now.

Me? I'm excited about next year. FSU is way ahead of schedule. So far Norvell is playing the portal and NIL like Al Hirt played the trumpet. (Ask your grandparents who Al Hirt is.)

But, I'm cautiously optimistic. I remember Jimbo Fisher. Norvell does not have the character flaws of Jimbo. I'm not concerned about that. Just want to appreciate the climb and not assume the peak is a huge plateau that will last for years.

We should have fired Muschamp at least a year sooner and went after norvell. Always liked him. Y’all got a good one.

Norvell will be hugely successful because he is a good coach, he has the history, the support and will get the players. If that sounds like Dabo, it is.

True.

Be careful with Bell. If he doesn’t get PT he thinks he deserves his whole family is going to drag your staff all over twitter.

Some clearly need to come back, they need another year to grow and improve. But let's not kid ourselves: The main factor, by far, is whether or not they stand to benefit financially from leaving or coming back. If it's a close call, if the advice they are getting is mixed, some may indeed come back, and that's great, that's what we want, and credit to Dabo. For most, I'm thinking it's cut and dried; don't turn down the money.
