Just a wild guess, but, judging from the general tone of your posts, I am guessing that is a leap of faith that you would have NEVER have taken had you been in TDP's position in 2008? Tell me true.

that's correct....fully admit that.....and it WAS lightning in a bottle. So why keep going back to that if your Dabo? I also don't mind taking a "flier" hire every now and then IF surrounded by some solid experience. Dabo went on hiring spree with the inexperience former player hires on the offensive side of the ball and it just didn't/hasn't worked.

just like Hunter Renfrow was lightning in a bottle. That doesn't mean the next 10 "walk-ons" will turn out that way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I also will admit, I didn't have the first clue who Dabo Swinney even was, prior

to Tommy Bowden's departure. But, I did like the fact that he immediately took the bull by the horns, and fired Rob Spence, who was a big part of the problem, IMHO. And, I liked the little changes he made to promote team unity. It remained to be seen if he could motivate, and recruit, AND coach. Those questions were answered well enough to get him hired, at a low cost discount.

But, as I have often said, I give Terry Don Phillips even MORE credit for retaining Dabo Swinney after the disappointment of the 2010 season, than I did for the initial hire. He basically put BOTH their jobs on the line when he retained him, under some substantial fire to do otherwise. And the rest, as they like to say, is HISTORY.

Always thought Dabo to be one that will give a guy an opportunity. This even more so with him seeing how he has gotten to where he is now. If you do end up fixing what is wrong then all is good and you helped a guy possibly use that experience to do bigger things. I do understand it being a cut throat business and we are not the place to be training new coaches as some say but just feel I do understand the reasoning.

for making some of the hires that he did in the first place considering Clemson and the resources have the capability of hiring top tier coaches from a salary perspective.

like having a slew of qualified resumes and a slew of non-qualified resumes for the position you're hiring for and picking 4-5 from the non-qualified pile.........sure fliers are great.......take a chance every now and then, but he went "all-in" on TOO MANY inexperienced coaches.....especially offensively.

History has proven Dabo's methods and approach to work more often than not. And when it works, it works bigly. And when it doesn't, we're still largely badasses, just not national champ type of badass. And like the bona fide leader he is, when it doesn't work, he adjusts.

Glad you're just a T-netter and not part of any program decision-making.

Wes is a TERRIBLE example to make your point! Wes had 3 years of NFL experience under a two time super bowl champ coach. And his role was the brain behind Bruce Ariens. Ariens told you in interviews what a billiant defensive coach he was. Then Wes had about 4+ years I believe in the SEC under Sylvester Croom and Ellis Johnson. Those are heavy hitter defensive coordinators of the SEC and brilliant defensive minds. Croom and Johnson both said they learned more from Wes than he did from them! Then he had how many years under Venables? And Venables was going to take him to Oklahoma to be his DC? You may not have known who Wes Goodwin was, but his resume was so far ahead of any of the offensive coaches, Riley included, that it isn't even funny.

The Wes hire......I didn't mind b/c our talent on defense was absurd....tough to screw that up.

BUT.......when the talent level takes a dive like it did starting 2021 and Elliott leaves Dabo gives Streeter a job he's not ready for AND WITHOUT THE TALENT to help. Bad OC, low level talent, & low level asst coach talent is not a good recipe.................If I (and many others on here) can see that.....Dabo should've seen that.

Streeter had the 2nd best QB productivity next to only Lincoln Riley during his tenure as QB coach. And before you lose your junk on DW and TL, remember Cole Stoudt, Kelly Bryant, and Chase Brice were under his tutelage as well.

Not qualified? DJ was a Heisman mention halfway through last season. His YOY improvement from '21 to '22 was very impressive. We were one L away from a CFP berth. Won the ACC. 11 wins. With less talent than '23. And better O #'s across the board compared to G-Money this year.

and Dabo saw that and canned him a year later after Dabo realized his hiring MISTAKE. He then went out and hired the BEST OC available. That however just solves a PIECE of the puzzle. Yea, there have been some questions about a couple groups, but overall we’ve been held back by a lack of elite or great QBs. Maybe Cade will get there, but DJ reached his ceiling. You have to commend the staff for having us a coot win away from being in the 4 frontrunners for the CFP.

We’ve needed an elite QB for the last 3 seasons. The QB is the most important position on the field, period.

That’s not to say there haven’t been a couple things - like OL push and toughness and WR fundamentals - but overall the program has been held back by not having that elite or even great QB. That’s the most critical thing and it can’t really be argued. The elites and great are led by elite and great QBs. That’s the way it is most every time if not all.

You do know we were headed to the playoffs last year before foot fiasco, right? That’s great coaching considering the handicap at QB. And oh yeah, weren’t we 4-4 this year and written off for dead before winning 4 straight including two ranked wins. That’s also solid coaching no doubt. With Cade running things as a not quite ready guy, we were able to find ways to win as a team. That’s coaching.

Your efforts to come up with this stuff is quite comical.

The DJ era was painful. DJ is the PRIMARY reason for a lack of a dynamic offense.

Cade is a developing QB whose team dropped the ball, including him, at the worst of times and it can CLEARLY be said those turnovers cost a 4 games.
