Dabo, the portal, and the future ...

Has the game passed Dabo by, or are we in good shape going forward?

  Which is it?    [Results]

Dabo's reluctance to aggressively use the portal is hurting us. The game is passing him by, and Clemson will be left behind because of it.
Dabo knows exactly what he's doing, and we'll be back in the playoff picture soon.

I think the new 12 team playoff adds a new dynamic to this discussion.

The new reality is that a team can be far from dominant early, drop a couple of games throughout the schedule and develop it's young players to be ready by season's end. Win your conference and you are in the playoff with a chance and a team that is peaking at the right time.

On the flip side, some of these mercenaries may not stay engaged through that type of run. Opting out of playoff games is coming at some point. We have already seen high level teams losing guys to the portal prior to New Year's 6 bowl games. The exiting portal may affect a playoff team at some point as well.

Clemson will not likely have the most talented team in the country anytime soon with Dabo's approach, but the goal is setting up a team to make a run and with more room for error we still don't know if Dabo's style will work or not.

I agree that the 12 team playoff will give us some wiggle room to get into the CFP, but we have to be able to win the ACC championship and right now Florida State and Miami are out-portaling the schitt out of us.

I believe that elements of both options are true. I really think we could win a natty in the next couple years with the young talent and cade at qb. I also think our program is in trouble long term.

Wrong again...we are in great shape...the same money may not be available for football excursions in the future...some schools don't have enough fans to pay the coaches and scholarships and support welfare sports!

This portal issue is getting greatly exaggerated. Last year 7 players came back an extra year that were
expected to leave thereby taking positions that could have been addressed in the portal.
There was more publicized offers to players in the portal this year, but none have committed. I have heard criticism that the coaches do not know how to recruit transfers. I think it is more likely that Clemson is not going in and offering tons of money to buy a player. The culture is to go after a certain type of player THAT FITS. The coaches want players that want to be at Clemson, not a rent a player. Yes,
FSU went undefeated and had a roster full of transfers. Just remember that Clemson only lost to FSU because a kick was 2 feet wide. Keep in perspective that the portal is still open and we are not kicking off the 2024 season yet. There will be some more departures, and there may still end up being a couple of transfer portal guys taken yet.

In regards to the FSU game, maybe my bias has something to do with it, but from what I saw, we ran FSU up and down the field. When the scoop and score occurred, we were easily driving on them. We score on that drive, I believe the game is over.

While you can't doubt the courage and ferocity, of some mercenaries, I'd rather have someone fighting for his country over someone fighting for a dollar. I'd rather have someone that wants to be a Tiger, than someone chasing that buck. Maybe that's a terrible analogy, but it's the way I look at it.

I hope that somehow this NIL portal thing gets under control before what's left of college footballs purity is gone forever.

Too early to make a call on that yet...

What I do know is that we were 8-4 this season, and we lost to a few average/mediocre teams. Hard to find the right lipstick to doll up that pig. When you compare the current state of affairs to that of prior to 2021, again... it's hard to see it as anything but a regression, for whatever reason you choose. The guy making $10M/year is responsible for the results... good or bad.

And he took full ownership of the results, and he made some pretty significant changes. I like that he was more open about who in the portal they went after, but as stated above I don't want a 1 year rental player who's only loyal to the NIL money. If they don't fit the culture here then I don't want them. If that means we're a perpetual 10-2 team at best, I'm fine with that. I know there's plenty of t-netters (T-nutters) that are Natty or bust, and even then aren't happy.

As the old saying goes - you can't please everyone all of the time, some people just won't be happy no matter what. I don't drink the Dabo kool-aid, but I do give him the benefit of the doubt based off of his track record. He's earned that much. Come the end of his contract, if he's not performing to the standard, then revisit things.

to refute something I said? If so you didn't do a very good job. If we are a 10-2 team next year and are clearly moving in the right direction with recruiting that is comparable to the standard Dabo set ten years ago, then I will be fine with it.

BTW, you might want to go easy with the "T-Nutter" after being here for less than two years, when some of us have been on here for over twenty-five.

I've been around for a lot longer than 2 years as a guest reader, it wasn't until I wanted to start posting that I made an account, but I will grant you that I'm not even close to a 25 year resident, both official and unoffical. That however has nothing to do with my opinion that there are certainly individuals on here that take extreme positions on everything, both positive and negative. Those I call T-nutters, most normal people don't live on the extremes, but somewhere in the middle. Quite capable of going to an extreme on occasion, but not on every single topic.

And no, I wasn't trying to refute you, just pointing out that Dabo has taken ownership of the 8-4 season and made the changes he felt was necessary. I don't expect miracles, and I don't expect 12-0 every year. I expect the best out of any given year's team that it can give, whatever the record. My own opinion is that we under performed this year, but I'm encouraged that steps have been taken to improve for next year.

I think he aggressively used the portal this year as the coaches reached out to multiple players and made offers which resulted in signing a true transfer player.

His issue is not with the portal, although he will always favor recruiting from the HS ranks, his issue is with paying up front NIL. Pay-for-play is still not on his agenda.

The NIL/portal rules and Dabo's high standards for recruits are impacting talent levels on the team, and for that reason without vast improvement in the o-line and another TL16/DW4 level QB, Clemson will be highly challenged to compete at the highest levels of college football.

Every year. It's extremelt difficult. And absolutely we need big improvement on the O-Line and generational QBs help. Not sure how it follows that the portal is the answer. Dabo has addressed it and simply says that there was nobody available that they felt was a better fit than the recruits they were bringing in. I really believe that if there was somebody in the portal that Dabo thought would really help us, more than a recruit we had comig in at a particular position, he'd go after them. The fact that he didn't is an indication he didn't think there was. People seem to think the portal is some kind of magic answer, but it comes at a price; it's a trade off. It's not the reason we've struggled some the last two years.
