Defense was too fast

Sep 17, 2012, 3:01 PM

I took the opportunity to speak with a defense back who wants to remain nameless but told me what one of the issues has been in covering the run. He said that all the teams we have played have ran off tackle and not straight up the middle, and part of the problem is that they are over pursuing on there tackles and gap assignments. I asked, why? and he said because they were too fast in reading the play and it gave the ball carrier a cut back lane. He said that the only way to correct this problem was to move the safeties up in order fill the cut backs but BV was not willing to move up the safeties because of the lack of coverage. He felt like this defense could go far and get much better if everyone would quit reverting back to the old style of thinking, which was thinking too much. He said Steele had them thinking about everybodies assignment and they forgot their own. That is part of the problem with blown coverage. I asked the last question, which was, why can't you guys get your heads around on the ball when it's in the air? His response was that they had been coached to steal the ball out of the players hands on contact and that teams have figured out that beat us on the back shoulder stuff now, by drawing interference. He also said that some of the players are losing their guy in coverage because they are trying to read the qb.

So what does all this mean for Saturday's game?

I'm still concerned about our stopping Florida St. and avoiding a repeat of the OB.
