DEION SANDERS... MEH, WHO CARES?

Whenever Deion Sanders builds a program from the ground up and expresses some level of commitment to the players that commit to the program, I will start to care. Anyone can exploit 48 top notch players from the transfer portal and win a few football games. That's not coaching. Dabo Swinney built a middle of the pack ACC program to be a national championship contender for 6 years straight. Sure, Clemson may have their down seasons just like any other team, but he doesn't dump a player's scholarship just because that player didn't perform well right out of high school. Maybe I'm missing it, but I don't see what Deion Sanders has accomplished that is so impressive.

GO TIGERS!

scholarships though. But the fact is, this is future college football and if Dabo continues to replace 10-15 empty scholarships, left open by sophomores and juniors, with high school and walkon players every single year, this program will continue a swift slide into mediocrity. It's not an opinion, it's just common sense.

On the other side of the coin, you'll have a bunch of self-entitled spoiled brats on your roster from the portal and they will infect your locker rooms and meeting rooms like a virus. The 4 and 5 star recruits we are pulling in from high schools are committed to Clemson and the culture that Dabo has built there. I'd rather be 1-12 every year and have a great atmosphere than 15-0 with a bunch of self-entitled morons on the team. Also, one of the very reasons why 5 Stars choose Clemson is because of Dabo's loyalty and his genuine character. I wouldn't change that for anything. Those players will stick around the program even during tough times.

Uhh...nobody would tolerate 1-12 (it would actually be 1-11, there'd be no 12th game). The entire staff would be fired.

#1 if we were 1-12 every year we would NOT have a great Atmosphere........just ask Colorado.

#2 you're making an extreme assumption that "transfers are cancers". If 3-5 transfers (or in Clemson's need case 2-3) completely wreck your "culture" and locker room, then it wasn't a stable one to begin with. Portal use needs to be a case by case basis..........Colorado SUCKED, their players SUCKED, Deion changed that. No Clemson fan in their right mind would advocate doing what he did AT CLEMSON. We're not there yet. If Dabo is a leader of young people and molder of young people and mentor to young people like we say/think he is then he could more than handle a couple (example) portal WRs added to the roster without collapsing any culture he's built.

NIL and portal is the current and future of College football.........personally i HATE IT, but I also know that if Clemson, the school I love and graduated from is going to ever get back to our 2015-2019 days Dabo has to adapt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is a very stereotypical and inaccurate assumption that

1

you're making about kids looking for a better opportunity.

Stereotypes are scorned but rarely innaccurate...

Sep 23, 2023, 12:24 AM

with that said, I don't believe the personality traits he ascribed to transfers qualifies as a stereotype but is
rather a fallacy—

It's awfully simple and quite frankly LAZY to say that ALL transfer kids are self entitled spoiled brats that will infect your team like a virus.

You DO realize we have committed highly ranked players that come to Clemson and leave. Every. Single. Year. Quite a few actually.

This whole situation isn't as binary as you seem to think it is.

Re: C'mon dude.

Sep 20, 2023, 5:43 PM

Not to mention a great number of those portal players were recruited BY CLEMSON and simply chose a different school for one reason or another.

The inverse can also have an impact

So you'd rather lose with Dabo than win with Deion.

That's fine and at least youre honest and clear about it.

A winning culture, a losing record.

Sounds good.

Problem is that isnt really on the table when your HC is making stupid money to keep
the program up there in the rare air.

From 2015-2019 we signed an average of 21 new signees a year. From 2020 to present we’ve signed 22. So your assertion that something is changing and we’re replacing transfers with 10-15 new signees a year is completely unfounded. It’s not common sense, it completely false.

He is starting kind of at the bottom. Also, it's not as if he is loaded with high ranking transfers. It's a real mix.

This. People act like he’s trotting out some kind of CFB all star team. His son was barely recruited out of high school.

I hope my son gets barely recruited like that. 26 offers is nothing to scoff at, among them were Bama, UGA, Tennessee, Oregon, Florida, FSU, Michigan, and LSU. Not too shabby.

https://247sports.com/recruitment/shedeur-sanders-106189/recruitinterests/

And FWIW Prime did handpick multiple studs from other teams that were sitting behind talented players elsewhere and wanted immediate playing time.

Lavonta Bentley and Savell Smalls say hello. If you look at their roster, there are many players that had offers to play for our Tigers.

His final college choices came down to a Florida Atlantic and JSU where he wound up.

Also, Deion was able to get the top recruit in the country to sign with JSU in Travis Hunter.

This narrative that he poached highly rated players from other schools through the portal is just ignorant.

Sanders wasn't a high 4 out of HS. He was a 3 star on that list above. 37th ranked. He was rated higher as a transfer of course.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with you but you left out one critical factor.

4

Sep 20, 2023, 5:09 PM

Dabo wants boys which are naturally talented and willing to work to develop their skills both on the field and in life.

Deon just wants guys who someone else has invested their time developing player skills.

Everyone know what shortcuts in life brings. Deon is cutting corners which will not be sustainable over any length of time. I suspect he will bail on his current team and jump to another job where he can do to them exactly what he's doing now.

Can you say bandaid on a broken leg?

If possible, I care even less about Subprime's antics than do you.

2

Sep 20, 2023, 5:13 PM

I don't think any of this is true at all.

Deion had to turnover his roster. It was a 1-win team with very little talent. The only way to do that on a mass scale, without 4 years of terrible results, is the transfer portal.

Don't ignore the fact that he's already successfully recruited 5-star talent, at both of his head coaching gigs.

His approach may be direct and abrasive, but to say he's riding the coattails of what others developed is short-sighted. You are creating a story here, based on year 1 of re-building a program (which is 3-0 btw).

Re: I agree with you but you left out one critical factor.

Sep 20, 2023, 5:31 PM

Dumping players from your team, saying it is a two way commitment, will DESTROY everything Clemson has worked to build. It is not sustainable. If I came to Clemson believing I could work hard, earn a spot, then coach brings in a transfer to replace me,time for me to go. Go Tigers! Do things the honorable way.

Re: I agree with you but you left out one critical factor.

Of course it wouldn't work at Clemson. I'm not saying it would. But it was necessary at Colorado...and it has worked so far.

And that's exactly what DJ did, went elsewhere when he was replaced. What's the difference if it's a transfer or someone who was recruited out of high school?

You mean like pulling a kicker off the beach?

Or a brand new high school kid like TJ Parker? What’s the difference? Does it make it alright to the Jr who gets beat out that the kid is 18 years old and been on campus for 6 months versus a 20 year old from another school that’s been on campus for 6 months?

near 100% in productivity? 2 position groups to consider right off the top: DE & [OL,(OT)]. Even still you're looking at a 2-3 wait period minimum for development unless you can consistently pluck top 40 5stars at multiple positions increasing hit rate with the hope come in ready & red shirt avoidable. And even in that scenario a mercurial 17-18 yr old may portal out.
You are essentially giving every other school a significant advantage when it comes to talent acquisition by continuing down this road of an "embargo on the portal" coupled with these annual walk-on "grants". We are already at a disadvantage geographically as SC produces a very low number blue chips per year & revenue wise(ACC)—

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is no question about it

Sep 20, 2023, 5:45 PM

You are missing it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: DEION SANDERS... MEH, WHO CARES?

Sep 20, 2023, 6:14 PM

As Dabo has stated many times, some teams, like Colorado and FSU, needed to make great use of the portal in order to resurrect dead programs. Dabo does not have to do this. But, he may need to go for 4-5 guys every year to fill in any gaps. As far as the character of portal guys, I've seen Paul Tyson interview. Seems like a pretty straight shooter to me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo DOES have to do this to compete for championships

Sep 20, 2023, 10:23 PM

That's a fact. If 8-10 wins each year is good enough, you may be correct Dabo does not need the TP.

Sep 21, 2023, 12:20 PM

I did not say Dabo does not have to use the portal. I simply and clearly stated he should use it to fill in specific gaps or needs. He does not need to bring in 15-20 portal guys like other schools have.
