Depth Chart

May 11, 2016, 9:24 AM

I really liked getting the depth chart during this football news desert. On some of the 2nd team spots, I wonder if the coaches are truly listing the 2nd best player, the first guy they're going to look to in the event of an injury, or just to combat fatigue, or are they using those depth chart spots to motivate guys over the summer?

We heard good things about Pollard and Anchrum, but are they really the 1st guys off the bench? I'd love them to a) be that talented and b) be able to redshirt this year to get bigger and smarter while not spend a year of eligibility for spot duty.

What's Clelin going to be like at DE? The coaches liked him last year and if he'd been healthy, would have avoided a redshirt. I think he can be a star, but I also really like Yeargin. Looking at the guys we have, DE could actually be a strength, if not this year, then certainly next.

The slot position is also really interesting with two walkons (or former walkons) and one 4* trying to make his move.

It's somewhat ridiculous to look out a year from now, but when DW moves on, he'll probably take the top 3 receivers and leading rusher, 3 of whom will likely be underclassmen. His center will graduate, but other than QB, we look to have guys ready to say "my turn". Granted, we'll lose the best player in college football, team leader, and the focal point of the offense, but if you're going to have that kind of a loss, it sure is good to have a talented WR core, a stable of RBs, and a powerful, experienced, and talented OL returning. If there were ever a case where a team just needs a game manager, this will be one.

On defense, we'll lose Boulware, Watkins, Tankersley. and Johnson, but everybody else including reserves will be back. DB recruiting remains critical, but if we can get any improvement there, this will be a stout defense, for the next two seasons, and likely beyond.

OL is tough to have a true depth chart because they cross train all those guys. I imagine Morris is the sixth offensive lineman and you shuffle the other positions depending on what's needed.
