Did the umps ever explain the third base interference call?

Apr 22, 2017, 9:03 AM

Making the CORRECT call, then reversing it to an INCORRECT call deserves some explanation!

bottom line is Jolly was out, and should not have run

Apr 22, 2017, 9:18 AM

everybody around me at the game agreed that "interference" or not, he should have been out. He was out by a mile. You probably couldn't tell on TV what a bad decision it was.

These new "interference" calls, where "the catcher can't block the plate", or "the runner can't take out the shortstop", are ridiculous. Helps the self-appointed caretakers of society sleep at night, I suppose. But it takes away from the sport of baseball as it was intended to be played.

Clemson also got a few "make-up" calls due to that call. One was the WF player stealing third, and I believe we got a couple really good ball/strike calls after that too.

I missed the game. DIid our 3rd base coach stroke again?

Jolly probably did that on his own

Apr 22, 2017, 9:26 AM

it was normally a 50/50 shot. But Jolly got a terrible jump off second. First 3 or 4 steps were slow. Should have aborted and gone back, but he went ahead with it. I mean, this throw even INVOLVED A RELAY from left field. And he was still out.

Our third base coach does not know how to do anything but wave our runners around this year. The one versus FSU on Monday was terrible.

Scooter we have to disagree on the play...

I agree it was a dumb move by Jolly, but that third baseman was not blocking a foot or two from the bag, he was well up the base path, I would say a good two yards from the bag.

well monte said jolly did the right thing, that he had to get to third, so i will go with that if it is ok.

3rd baseman wasn't blocking bag, was standing in base path.

You've never been able to stand in a base path and interfere with the runner.

Yes, it was a bad decision by Jolly, but you can't interfere with a runners progress.

Question was ... did he have the ball before Jolly arrived

Apr 22, 2017, 11:18 PM

Answer on replay was no, but the umpire saw it differently in real time and stood by his call.

If he believed the ball arrived before Jolly then the call was correct.

Jolly was there before the ball so It was a bad call, but so was the call at first when our guy was out by a full step.

Not a great night for the umps.

They did. They explained to both coaching staffs that they're just a terrible umpiring crew and to endure it for the rest of the series as they will miss many calls today.
