DJ's Clock is Ticking

The transfer portal clock is ticking. I think DJ is in a crowded field that is shrinking by the day. If he is looking to be the guaranteed starter at a big boy program his options are dwindling. There is some competition in the portal for QB's right now that have either already been decided at some destinations (ND, Michigan State) and more QB's with talent still visiting other schools.

I'm not sold on his talent and leadership (same as when he played here). I would take the likes of Maalik Murphy, Dante Moore, or Will Howard over DJ any day of the week.

Whether he is chasing NIL or getting more bad advice from his dad, he is going to end up on a bench somewhere or in a lesser program than he thinks he deserves.

He definitely should have finished his last year at Oregon state. It’s dwindling fast for most of the bigger name schools

He's on an official visit to FSU this weekend.

Will arrive either this evening or early tomorrow morning.

All FSU sites are saying the Ward (Wazzou) and DJU are the two QBs FSU is targeting.

Ward visited Miami earlier in the week and then came to FSU. His official visit ends today.

(There was some who Jokingly said that Ward and DJU would be on campus at the same time today and might run into each other.)

As for the internet portal gurus here is what they are saying.
1. Most think FSU has a better shot at getting DJ than Ward.
2. Most are saying they prefer Ward over DJ.
3. They give advantages and disadvantages that each have in the system Norvell runs.

Putting it all together here is my best guess:
1. Ward wants to play on a winner next year. If Cristobal can convince him that Miami is back and he can lead them to the playoffs, then Ward will pick Miami.
2. Ward is looking to play behind a solid OL. Norvell has to convince him that the FSU OL will be improved over this year.
3. Ward has options. If he's not satisfied with either Miami or FSU he will still end up at a P4, and probably a P2, school.

As for DJ the general consensus is while he is not as exciting a player ad DJ (in terms of making big plays with his feet) he is a very good fit for Norvell's offense. He had a good year at Oregon State - 2600 yards, 21 TD, 7 INT, 57% completion. Not a great year, but certainly a good one. He's a 1 and doner which is what Norvell is looking for.

Me? I have no idea. I thought Grayson McCall was the best fit for FSU, so it shows what I know. FSU apparently wan't interested. I'll just go with "Trust Mike" and leave it at that.

In 3 years he has fumbled the ball 31 times. That is a red flag in his stats.

Watching DJ play for 3 years at Clemson, I see many flaws in his game. I saw nothing of him at Oregon State, so I have no idea how much he improved.

From my limited knowledge of football I would think there were 5-8 or so QBs more suited for FSU than DJ.

But, what do I know?

He was a proven commodity and they lost their backup who was supposed to be the next thing out there. They'd take him back in a heartbeat I'm sure and not be worse off for it.

Depends on timing and numbers. If they've already replaced his roster spot, or brought in another QB to start, or are out of scholarships, etc....they don't have to take him back.

Even the ones who derailed the program through lack of effort and then quit the moment he got benched? And afterwards promptly talked down on the program trying to make himself seem to be not at fault for being a bust? Even those guys?

He did what he could. He was part of winning a conference championship his last year.
He certainly had his limitations as a QB and did not play particularly well at times,
but the decision to keep playing him up until his benching in those circumstances was not his to make.

Whatever has been said afterwards, I really don't know about all that (particularly what DJU himself has said.....not talking about the media or his outspoken father).

I don't feel inclined to go out of my way to root for him, but I don't think we need to keep dumping on the guy. He was not the only issue that kept us out of the playoffs the last few years.

No. The backup left too. I think the OSU situation is so unsettled that no established QB would have stayed. No conference, no path to playoff, unknown coaching staff, decimated roster. Would you play your final season there?

He didn't improve and didn't regress. There were very bright moments and others where even the announcers were all over him for missing open receivers.

What helped DJ a lot is Oregon State was a run-oriented team. He needs to find a similar situation, regardless of the level of competition.

He definitely should NOT go to the NFL because it's very clear he isn't good enough. He only has a slim chance to even make someone's practice squad.

IMO, his best hope is to play another year in college and hope things come together. Probably won't happen but it's worth a shot.

Apparently he is also weighing the nfl. If he doesn’t get the right opportunity from a strong college program maybe he just takes his chances with the league.

Not saying I think that’s a successful path but was an option he was considering per his Twitter post.
