DJ's draft status

Oct 10, 2022, 5:51 PM

If DJ continues to have a good year do ya'll think he leaves earlier for the draft or comes back for one more year?

If he plays exactly as he has in first half, then NFL would probably draft him in the lower rounds.

Our OL is still improving (but hardly great as of now); better OL play would mean more plays, and more plays will make DJU better, as well as pad his stats.

Again, if H1 is extrapolated to H2, then DJU won't be a first or second rounder.

If OL really gels and plays consistently good (and this 'good' has to be against N.Dame and the bowl [? CFP?] opponents), then DJU's stats will be better and his draft status will improve. In this circumstance, DJU may well be a 2nd rounder ... maybe getting into the 1st round.

DJU will be a combine hero (big arm, good accuracy thus far in 2022 ... NFL likes the big stature guys). Regardless of whether he benefits from meaningfully better OL play in 2nd half, he'll be drafted.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

But does he leave Clemson for the pros if his play and Clemson's overall play stays steady for 2nd half of the season ... and he is slated for 4th or 5th round?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My guess is that he's gone regardless. Our defense is likely to take a step back next year, and our OL will have to replace LT McFadden and C Putnam (both of whom are having good years).

Although moving either Marcus Tate or Walker Parks to LT (both of whom can play the position); having a number of Guard prospects (maybe D.Pennington will be ready; maybe B.Tucker; maybe C.Sadler) from which to choose for the open G position; and for Center maybe P.Howard or R.Linthium will be ready ... the OL will once again have to master some big changes for 2023 season.

For these reasons, I think DJU is gone after 2022.

This might be truly a flight of fancy, but riddle me this:

Oct 10, 2022, 7:54 PM

What NFL team built their offense for over a decade, around a tall, sturdily built, prototypical pocket passer, who recently retired? This same team is struggling mightily this year, and is even projected to have the first pick in the draft in some early estimations.

DJ would be a MUCH better fit for this organizations known offensive preferences than one Kenny Pickett, who they are trying to live with for now. Talking of course about the Pittsburgh Steelers. As I said, DJ going that high, or Pittsburgh taking QBs in two consecutive drafts might be a stretch. But, they could always deal Pickett and get something in return, if somehow that scenario DID happen.

You think the Steelers see anything of Big Ben in DJ beyond his being big and slow? Quite a stretch indeed.

I think he's done after this season no matter what. QBs tend to get overdrafted so I'm sure someone would pick him.

I think DJ goes pro after the season. Assuming consistent performance through the 2nd half of season, I think he puts to rest concerns about his ability to make it at the next level. Obviously, he has a cannon, he’s proven to be accurate again, and improved touch, his reads, and decision making. One thing that doesn’t get mentioned enough imo, and one is as important as any measurable is durability (physical and mental). DJ is tough and can take a beating. Any player that has a knack for staying healthy (or healthy enough to continue playing) should get extra consideration imo. His mental toughness and ability to bounce back after a rough season speaks to this and should also helps his stock.

Had a dream the other day that DJ would be a day one pick and that either the falcons or shall I say ....the buccaneers are going to come calling for the big guy! I feel the falcons would be a better fit because he could sit behind mariotta for most of the year. If goes to the bucs, it could be fugly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ridder will be starting for the Falcons soon

Oct 11, 2022, 9:58 PM

and I think he’s a better fit at QB there than DJ.

The Falcons watched a ton of film and targeted Ridder for a long time.

I think it would be better for him and his draft stock to come back and deliver another year just to show consistency and put to rest any concerns from last year. I also think he would develop into a much better QB with another year in college. He won't get the same attention and coaching if he is QB3 on an NFL team so take advantage of another year at this level and really hone your skills for the next level.

He's graduating in December -- bearing a 2nd half of the season meltdown I believe he's going to head out.

Here's to hoping we can get some big leads moving forward to get CK2 more experience heading into next year.

If he has a season that leads us to the CFP, then he’ll be

Oct 11, 2022, 5:54 PM

... in demand. He will have the opportunity to go pro early.

Our chances of making the CFP are only as good as DJs performance the last half of the season.

If we go undefeated and make the CFP field, DJ will have been the reason, and he will have a choice to make.

He might benefit from another year of college, but then again he may want to stroke while the iron is hot.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Come back. Don't think he'd be drafted before 4th/5th round.***

If he continues along the current path, no later than a second round pick.

He's peaked. He's gone. Hard to visualize him playing on Sundays.

But then again ... Brady went 6th Round.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Disagree that “he’s peaked” ... he’s improved every game and

Oct 12, 2022, 10:24 AM

... there is no reason to believe that won’t continue.

He’s doing a great job. He needs his WRs to step up their game to match his.

If that happens, watch DJ’s stock take off.

This is going to sound crazy, but i wonder how DJ would look in the Buckeye offense with all their receivers healthy?

Re: DJ's draft status

Oct 12, 2022, 11:29 AM

Not a crazy hypothetical imo. I’ve wondered the same thing.

There’s a reason why OSU QBs have either underperformed at the NFL level, or have been overvalued at the collegiate level-depending upon one’s perspective. The OSU talent/system is often debated among fans as to the quality of the QBs.

Don’t get me wrong, I believe the OSU QBs of the past have been talented, along with Stroud, but I also suspect most college QBs would thrive in their system as well.

Regardless, I expect DJ to go pro. ?

Well, you saw how he looked during his Freshman year against BC and ND with a much better team around him so one might expect he could win the Heisman Trophy if he was the QB at OSU.

I he (via Dabo) already alluded to this being his last season at Clemson due to either declaring or transferring?
