Do we not use the middle of the field on crossing patterns

Nov 10, 2022, 11:19 PM

Because of a fear of injury to our WRs? My recollection with DW was that we always threw low on crossing patterns to get the WR on the ground so he wasn’t murdered by a safety or LB. Are the coaches scared DJ can’t lead the WR to the ground so they avoid anything but deep down the center?

I think we avoid the middle of the field because DJ fires rockets on every pass and if it is tipped it’s generally intercepted.

Why throw over the middle when the 50/50 balls, back shoulder throws and WR screens are so successful.

Sending all of our receivers to the sidelines opens up the middle for the QB to run for 2 yards after staring down one receiver for 15 seconds.

Honestly that is more precision passing. Even if DJ for some reason the 25% of the time he throws to the right spot, it is thrown so hard our weak handed receivers drop it. So, the bubble screens, where our receivers have to turn around to catch them and take a step backwards, thus allows the other team a fighting chance to stop the play they already knew was coming which in turn allows us to get into long 3rd down throwing downs. This then allows DJ to move his feet around in the pocket without setting his feet and allows him to overthrow our receivers down the field. Sometimes, he just disguises his footwork enough to give the other team a chance to hug him and throw him down so that they feel like they have a chance. It is all done for sportsmanship. We should thank DJ and Streeter for helping the games to be so close.

Crossing routes have left the building.

DJ can't hit a laterally moving target. He is prone to throw behind a receiver causing the receiver to reach back and tip the ball sending it high enough for a safety to catch. Those plays are no longer in our playbook.
