sacrificing his life so Luke and his friends could escape the Death Star was pointless since the Empire was going to let them escape anyway because they put a tracker on the Millenium Falcon?

Did he sacrifice himself so they could escape, or did he do it knowing he would become a force ghost and communicate to Luke when he needed it most, like before taking the shot during the Death Star trench run?

He could've done that without fighting Vader.

Obi-Wan could have just surrendered and the Empire would have executed him. By confronting Vader next to the blast doors leading to the docking bay, he was able to draw off the storm troopers who were guarding the Falcon. Plus, he was able to give Luke that sexy look right before he died.

Maybe he did it to lure Vader into a false sense of security. Vader had no way of knowing that Master Yoda was still alive, or that Yoda would soon have a new pupil that would eventually rebuild the Order, so perhaps by sacrificing himself, Vader would mistakenly believe that he had eliminated his greatest threat and would therefore introduce some vulnerability that Luke and the rebels could exploit.

It’s GDMF MADDENING. No, you have to read through every.single.post to see if someone said something similar to you because there is ZERO EFFING INDICATION OF THE GIST OF THE POST IN THE SUBJECT LINE. This is pure, unfiltered main board posting behavior, and should not happen here.

If anything , prolonging the fight would have distracted Vader for longer.
I do want to know though, if a barely-trained Rey can pull an Imperial transporter from the sky, why does Darth Vader repeatedly watch as his foes take off right in front of his face in far less powerful ships?

Hard disagree, the prequel trilogy is class. The most recent one however is pure aynus.
1. Empire 2. Revenge of the Sith 3. New Hope 4. Return 5. Phantom Menace 6. Attack of the Clones
7-9 who ####### cares the new ones were straight up ###

Putting Phantom Menace anywhere other than 8th or 9th on the series list discredits you along the same lines as putting Velveeta on your top 5 cheeses list. It was just jar-jar filled trash with cheesy effects and sub-par, even for Star Wars, acting and dialogue.

8th or 9th? It’s like you didn’t even see the new trilogy. I walked out of the most recent one.
Hating Jar Jar is just a meme at this point, the movie has Darth Maul, Qui Gon Jin, droid armies, good plot and politics, etc, it’s an objectively good Star Wars movie.

In the theaters were turned off by jar jar within 20 seconds of his appearance in I. And the droid armies were really corny attempts at comic relief, constantly delivering one-liners like “uh-ohhhh”.
Phantom Menace was Lucas picking up where he left off with the Ewoks….too freaking concerned about selling toys to kids to make a good movie.
Angry crusty anti-Jedi Luke was absolutely the worst use of him in the sequels, but all of them were a far sight better than phantom menace.
I can only see someone truly liking phantom menace if they were younger when it came out and it was their first time seeing a Star Wars franchise film in the theater. Absent that nostalgia though, it has nothing going for it.

Hayden Christensen is just the worst. Just such a casting fail. He makes Mark Hamill’s lousy Luke acting look like Sean Penn.
I like 3 the best of the prequels simply because it’s a joy seeing him get his legs cut off and burned.

I read an article at one point, the reason why the dialog was so bad in 2 and 3 was they were using new IMAX equipment and no one realized how loud the equipment was until they were in sound editing. The actors were required to go recreate their dialog in a sound studio.
And, on top of that, hard to be a top notch actor when you're given lines like "I hate sand." as your pick-up go-to.

She's the most annoying Star Wars character ever created.
The Jar Jar storyline would have been more enjoyable if Lucas actually carried it through with the rumored "Darth Jar Jar" plot; that Jar Jar was actually the biggest Sith Lord of them all and the whole stupid behavior was an act.
Angry crusty anti-Jedi Luke was absolutely the worst use of him in the sequels, but all of them were a far sight better than phantom menace.
This portrayal of Luke ruined the whole sequel attempt; however, The Last Jedi was far worse than PM simply due to storytelling. As much childish #### as Lucas threw at us in PM, it was still a coherent story that stayed on target. Last Jedi was all over the ####### place with nonsensical storytelling, especially that side quest to the slave planet, or whatever. Rian Johnson, in the height of his arrogance, shot a beautiful-looking film but fumbled it with his poor attempt to redefine Star Wars.
The sequels had a nice initial set up if Johnson didn't ruin it. Then Abrams had to do whatever he could to rescue it in Rise of Skywalker.
Phantom Menace is hot dog ####, but not the worst. Even Attack of the Clones is worse than that.

Much did detract mightily from the sequels. Fix slavery? Check. Girl protagonist and antagonist? Check. Cast that had to look like a Benneton ad? Check.
“Story?….crap, I thought YOU were handling the story!”
Not to make it political, but we’ve discussed this before. Diversity as a natural occurrence is great. Forced diversity is the enemy of art.
