Why the hell did we burn a scholarship on this guy? He will NEVER see the field.
With Tajh, Stout, Kelly and McNeal all on scholarship, it seems like a waste!!!

Nobody has yet to make a valid argument why we need 6 scholarship QBs on the roster. Until then...

heres one....let the coaches do what they are paid to do. they obviously know the value of a scholarship and have decided to award these young men with one. who are you to question that?

is both classless and baseless. I'm sure he has no sense of how much these guys have to sacrifice in order to contribute to the team. I notice he still hasn't answered my question.

Well Roy Philpot tweeted this morning McElveen was given a scholly. If that is true, why is he and Morgan Roberts on scholarship? That would make 6 QBs on scholarship this season

They had four walk-on scholarships to give.

We didn't have a full 85 on scholarship this year, in part due to attrition. We can't address it until the 2013 class, so some walk-ons get a one-year scholarship in the meantime.

YO EINSTIEN...schollies are given on a year to year basis

And when they have extras because of attrition (guys leave the the a, or like this year 3 recruits didn't make it in) they give schollies to walkons. Happens every year. Does not mean the McElveen will be on scholly next year. Most likely he will not. It is just a reward for working hard in practice. If you didn't give these extra ones to walkons then they would truly be wasted because they wouldn't be used at all.

Handing out unused, one year scholarships to hard working, deserving walk ons is a common practice that makes sense alot of sense. The hope of the scholarship is why you walk on.

I'm all for rewarding walk-ons with scholarships, but 6 scholarship QBs seems like a dumb decision, especially, for example, if we wouldn't be able to take a 5* commitment because the class is full!

Do you not understand a 1 year walk on? It has no effect on the 2013 class.

Mcelveen ship... you don't understand
Aug 22, 2012, 9:36 AM

not flaming, but its pretty obvious there are some things you don't understand about awarding walkons scholarships. yes, its common to award a ONE YEAR 'ship to a walk on who has paid his dues. but perhaps a more important factor is that you very much need to be at the 85 limit in the fall semester..... if you are under 85, there are restriction on how many early enrollees you can bring in for Jan. enrollment. when you have a ship open up late (like we did when lawson did not qualify), it is imperative you fill that 'ship and it is almost always given to a walkon who has bee nthere for a couple years, paying his dues and helping us on the scout team. his 'ship will in no way impact how many kids we can sign in Feb.

perhaps if you had simply asked a question about the how's and why's of awarding a walkon a 'ship instead of attacking the kid... you might have gotten a clear answer sooner.

Regardless of how scholarships are given from a year-to-year basis, McElveen has had a major impact on the program without even playing. He has mentored Tajh throughout his career and basically served as an offensive coordinator for the team. The kid knows football, and he has shown that through assisting in signaling plays and making all the QBs better at practice. Just because you don't see him on the field doesn't mean you can say it is a "waste" of a scholarship.
Beat Auburn.
