Easley Police Officer killed.

2
58

Aug 2, 2023, 2:24 PM

An Easley Police Officer was killed in the line of duty this morning around 0500 hours. The officer was helping someone when the officer was struck by an Amtrack train.

Officer Michael Hare was struck while helping someone that was having a Mental Health crisis.

Often, you may find members of Easley Police helping at Clemson games.

Pray for the family and all of our men and women in Blue. Also, pray for all of our Public Servants and their families.

Until Valhalla, RIP Matthew Hare.

Much respect for the majority of the police men and women across this nation. The things they have to put up with on top of the increased chances of not making it home would be a tough gig. Hate hearing this news! Pray the family has plenty of support around them to help make it through this tragedy.

Those members of Easley Police are getting overtime pay to "help at Clemson games", no? Seems like a sweet gig if you ask me.

Hmmm. Most trains do not have stealth capabilities. Most police officers are quite observant. Those two facts make me wonder how this happened.

Please read the story attached below. It may not answer all your questions but may answer some. I am sure there is an extensive investigation taking place. The one line in the story that is alarming is the person who called 911 is in custody. Makes me wonder if the caller was the patient having the crisis and if more took place. Body cam film will be reviewed and should tell the story.

The way I read it was that he was trying to get a person with mental problems off the track. Pretty simple to understand.

I was in Easley about noon today. I was at a stop light waiting to turn onto route 8 just south of 123. When the light changed a couple of cars kept coming through the light that was red from the north on route 8 then an unmarked police car came through with his lights on followed by an ambulance also with its lights on but going very slow. As I sat there at the light a procession of somewhere between 30 and 40 (not exaggerating at all) police vehicles from the City of Easley, Pickens County, and unmarked - all with their lights on followed the ambulance through the intersection. The last vehicle in the procession was a fire truck. I knew when I saw this something bad must have happened probably involving a first responder but I didn’t know what had happened until I got home and saw the news. This is so sad. He was just doing his job and trying to help someone. Prayers for his family and all his coworkers and colleagues. 🙏 ☹️

Oh no, what terrible news. I'm so very sorry to hear this. And dealing with a mental health crisis seems to be an unfortunate and large part of their jobs these days.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He was a great kid. Just graduated from the academy and was

2

Aug 2, 2023, 7:16 PM

starting his career. He was one of those kids who you could see being the Chief 10-15 years down the road. He was trying to save someone's life while killed in the line of duty.

To the lowlife who say anything in jest on this thread, what if it was your life he was trying to save?

As far as getting paid to work the Clemson games, it's a shame police officers don't get paid enough that they have to take extra gigs to make ends meet.

If you ever enjoyed a Clemson game, you were safer, and got in and out of there easier because of these officers from other jurisdictions that came to help.

Re: That's terrible.

3

Aug 3, 2023, 6:39 AM

Yeah, that would be my guess. Easley PD has not released details probably due to SLED investigating. It sounds like the caller that is in custody was the patient. Maybe the patient wanted to commit suicide by train and the officer saved him and in turn gave up his own life. Time will tell.

Mental Health is such a serious issue in our Country or World for that matter. There is such a stigma with trying to get help sometimes.

Selfless act by the officer.
