I'm a #######, question.....
Sep 19, 2012, 7:40 PM
|
|
why do they keep saying it would have been a HR at Turner Field but not on Marlin field?
Isn't there a regulation size for baseball fields?
(in football.. 50 yards is 50 yards everywhere)

I saw Rico Carty hit one over that wall on a line when I was in junior high, when they would sometimes show Braves games on Sunday afternoons.

The rules do give a range for the distance at various spots.
Sep 20, 2012, 7:21 AM
|
|
But within that range, teams can do whatever they want. Actually, there are loopholes where you can go out of the range, but you have to make up for it somewhere else, or something like that.

I would not have thought Atlanta's was that high, though.

It's a wonder Turner Field isn't more of a hitter's park. Old Fulton County sure was.

Here is a really oddly shaped baseball field
Sep 20, 2012, 9:04 AM
|
|
short pop ups down the line were home runs and you can hit the ball forever to center and it not leave the park.
Also there was a porch overhanging the field down the line in left so a catch-able ball could end up in the seats because of the overhang.

Willie Mays made his famous over the shoulder catch way out there in that deep center field. Probably 450 ft from home plate.
