I'm a #######, question.....

Sep 19, 2012, 7:40 PM

why do they keep saying it would have been a HR at Turner Field but not on Marlin field?

Isn't there a regulation size for baseball fields?

(in football.. 50 yards is 50 yards everywhere)

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No regulation

Sep 19, 2012, 7:41 PM

The Great American Ball Park is no bigger than my living room.

Have you noticed the numbers painted on the outfield walls,

Sep 20, 2012, 7:34 AM [ in reply to I've only been to one MLB field.*** ]

references to the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium, the short distance to the Green Monster at Fenway, the huge distance to dead center at etc.?

Is that black guy Dave Chappelle?

Sep 19, 2012, 8:05 PM

Dear God, please forgive me for think most black guys look like Dave Chappelle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL!

Sep 19, 2012, 9:12 PM

That guy really does!

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the Pirates' old Forbes Field was 461 to dead center

Sep 20, 2012, 7:43 AM [ in reply to Great thing about beisbol is stadiums are............ ]

I saw Rico Carty hit one over that wall on a line when I was in junior high, when they would sometimes show Braves games on Sunday afternoons.

"Every man is my superior, in that I may learn something from him."

The rules do give a range for the distance at various spots.

Sep 20, 2012, 7:21 AM

But within that range, teams can do whatever they want. Actually, there are loopholes where you can go out of the range, but you have to make up for it somewhere else, or something like that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also the ball carries farther in some parks like Coors field

Sep 20, 2012, 8:06 AM

The wind is a big factor too at AT&T field in San Francisco.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you know the 2nd highest elevation MLB park?

Sep 20, 2012, 8:16 AM

Turner Field.

I would not have thought Atlanta's was that high, though.

Sep 20, 2012, 8:57 AM

It's a wonder Turner Field isn't more of a hitter's park. Old Fulton County sure was.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Into my adult years, it was the highest park in MLB.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here is a really oddly shaped baseball field

Sep 20, 2012, 9:04 AM

short pop ups down the line were home runs and you can hit the ball forever to center and it not leave the park.

Also there was a porch overhanging the field down the line in left so a catch-able ball could end up in the seats because of the overhang.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The old Polo Grounds.

Sep 20, 2012, 9:07 AM

Willie Mays made his famous over the shoulder catch way out there in that deep center field. Probably 450 ft from home plate.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up
