Espn

May 16, 2023, 11:10 AM

I just visited their website and on their NCAA football page there is no mention of the possible demise of the ACC or even any mention of the meetings at all. Interesting.

With GOR, ESPN holds most of the cards. I think this is just some ACC schools posturing to try and get ESPN to the table to work something out. Until that happens, nothing really happens.

ESPN may be hoping that the ACC does dissolve. They have no interest in adjusting the ACC contract upward. If they get lucky, the ACC dissolves, Clemson and FSU join the SEC. ESPN still gets TV rights for SEC with a larger pool of teams and ESPN doesn't have to pay the ACC contract.

If that happens, ESPN may also not increase the SEC contract amount to account for the dilution of the SEC pool due to inclusion of Clemson and FSU. If so, would the SEC schools vote to include Clemson and FSU? Maybe not.

We could find ourselves in a worse position financially than we are in now.

Or ESPN's analysis could be ....We have a lot of content at a cheap price and they fight to keep ACC TV deal in place. I am sure ESPN is in loop with some 'intermediaries" with those looking to dissolve the conference. ESPN was a major player is SEC, Okla, and Texas deal. Their cost benefit analysis there was it was better route to get them in SEC. Big 12 called ESPN out for their role in the process.

Clemson generates more ESPN money that most SEC teams***

Well said. I was reading a tweet on twitter with that perspective.

And saw nothing about Pinky and the brain's impending plan to take over the world. Interesting; it's as if no one thinks the plan is likely to succeed.

ESPN is out of money so they can't do much.
