ESPN breaks down profits from the Notre Dame deal
Sep 13, 2012, 4:02 PM
|
|
Basically...
1) Notre Dame keeps all money from BCS games earned
2) Notre Dame gets an equal portion of the bowl revenue earned by the ACC if they get selected into an ACC bowl tie-in (almost guaranteed to happen)
3) Notre Dame keeps the profits from games against ACC teams that it hosts
So subtract 1/15 of the conference's bowl revenue from the sum of 2-3 ACC-hosted Notre Dame games and whatever Notre Dame brings in basketball, and that equals the ACC's profits from this deal.
We're talking between $1-5m to be divided among 14 full-member schools.
Outstanding.

When they take a bowl game from the ACC, they share the money. If they don't take a bowl game from the ACC then we get to keep the money. But they will take one of our bowls.

They deserve their own BCS money

they should not have to split it up like the rest of us do.
And if they take one of our bowls it is only fair that they take some of the money with them.

I agree on both counts

However, I don't think they should get the benefit of being in our bowl tie-ins at all without being a member of the conference.
The only way that makes sense is if the ACC is banking on earning a better bowl line-up because of access to Notre Dame. But the chances of that happening are pretty remote.

###.
If that wasn't part of it I wouldn't be as unhappy with it.
Aside from the $, other pros and cons.
Con - if the SEC et al goes to 16 teams and ACC wants to, we can't unless ND becomes full member. No way we could schedule that many games with a 16 team plus 1 quasi member.
Pro - HOPEFULLY this will get us out of the 8 conf game requirement
As far as banking on a better bowl, radio was talking about this and made me feel pretty negative about this happening. What major bowl is going to give up current affiliations for the chance of MAYBE hosting notre dame every so often?

Visting teams to Notre Dame get the vistors cut from the gate and a piece of the TV money which I think is shared.
You'd prefer Duke visit E. Carolina?
ND won't get a cut of ACC BCS money sharing

ACC teams keep the TV revenue from ACC-hosted games (on ESPN/Raycom/blahblahblah). Notre Dame gets to keep the TV revenue from the ND-hosted games (on NBC).
"Notre Dame will keep its broadcast partnership with NBC and won't receive TV revenue for other ACC football games covered by the league's recent 15-year deal with ESPN worth $3.6 billion. " http://sports.yahoo.com/news/notre-dame-acc-stay-independent-020940807--ncaaf.html
I still stand by my opinion that this deal is so incredibly one-sided in favor of ND. It's ridiculous that Swofford (and all the presidents, by association) hand the keys to ND and say "Oh hey... sure you can play in our bowl games... sure you can share our money... but you know what? We aren't actually going to make you a member because we love you so much. So if you have a better bowl outside of the ACC tie-ins, we're cool with you keeping the money to yourself."
Get back to me when an 8 win ND team that plays 7 games against whoever they want gets picked over a 9 win ACCCG runner up for the Chick Fil A Bowl.
