Braves have made a trade...Ryan Doumit

Dec 18, 2013, 3:20 PM

In exchange for Sean Gilmartin.

Doumit is a switch hitter, and I imagine he will be a primary weapon off the bench for Atlanta.

Sean Gilmartin is a lefty starter who was a first-round draft pick by the Braves in 2011 out of FSU, but has had back-to-back poor years on the farm.

Extra catcher without wasting a roster spot also****

Hmm...seems a little premature to give up on Gilmartin

Dec 18, 2013, 3:25 PM

I hope this doesn't turn into a Wainwright situation

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I doubt it...either way, it's a disappointing end result

Dec 18, 2013, 3:27 PM

For the Braves' first round pick. They haven't hit on many of those in the last decade or so, Jason Heyward and Mike Minor being exceptions.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I should say one poor year from Gilmartin

Dec 18, 2013, 3:27 PM [ in reply to Hmm...seems a little premature to give up on Gilmartin ]

2012 was not so bad.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And it's really very different from Wainwright...

Dec 18, 2013, 3:32 PM [ in reply to Hmm...seems a little premature to give up on Gilmartin ]

Adam was very highly regarded at the time of the trade, which is why the Braves were able to land a very, very good player in J.D. Drew. He had no performance issues, like Gilmartin. Gilmartin is being traded for a bench piece.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

J.D. Drew had been underachieving up until that trade

Dec 18, 2013, 3:36 PM

and he was in the last year of his deal...Braves were pretty foolish on that one

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Didn't say it was a great deal for Atlanta...I'm saying it's

Dec 18, 2013, 3:38 PM

Very different from Gilmartin. The Braves are, in a sense, "giving up" on Gilmartin. That was not the case for Wainwright. The Braves had a pretty good idea he would be a very good pitcher, but thought they could improve their chances at a championship by bringing in Drew. Drew was stellar in that one year for Atlanta, but it didn't work out for the team as a whole.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't know if any cash is involved (I guess not)...

Dec 18, 2013, 3:30 PM

Doumit is under contract just for 2014, at $3.5 million.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Doesn't that just send chills down your spine? Another

Dec 18, 2013, 3:34 PM

riveting offseason move by the Barves! What's next, have Bob Horner unretire and come back?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What would you like them to do

Dec 18, 2013, 3:35 PM

To drastically improve a team that won 96 games with a slew of injuries?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Take the cap hit and dump Uggla either by releasing him or

Dec 18, 2013, 3:39 PM

trading him for a few new baseballs and a pack of sunflower seeds.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Rest assured, they are trying to trade him.

Dec 18, 2013, 3:40 PM

And it won't be for much more than a bucket of balls if they do. If not, I believe they would at least consider releasing him if he started out (say, for a couple of months) poorly again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's played poorly for his entire contract in Atl, why keep

Dec 18, 2013, 3:41 PM

waiting for him to not suck?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because the Braves aren't the Yankees.

Dec 18, 2013, 3:43 PM

They can't afford to just eat $27 million dollars...they have to make every effort to squeeze life out of that contract.

Like I said, if he stinks again, I think the Braves would consider taking the sunk cost and plugging in La Stella. But they will at least try one more time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd like to see them add Adam Dunn.***

LOL! I bet you would.***

Dec 18, 2013, 3:48 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Braves aren't going to be able to take on much salary

Dec 18, 2013, 3:37 PM [ in reply to Doesn't that just send chills down your spine? Another ]

thanks to BJ Upton and Uggla...get used to it

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's why guaranteed contracts are a joke. At least in the
