Braves have made a trade...Ryan Doumit

In exchange for Sean Gilmartin.
Doumit is a switch hitter, and I imagine he will be a primary weapon off the bench for Atlanta.
Sean Gilmartin is a lefty starter who was a first-round draft pick by the Braves in 2011 out of FSU, but has had back-to-back poor years on the farm.

Hmm...seems a little premature to give up on Gilmartin

I hope this doesn't turn into a Wainwright situation

I doubt it...either way, it's a disappointing end result

For the Braves' first round pick. They haven't hit on many of those in the last decade or so, Jason Heyward and Mike Minor being exceptions.

And it's really very different from Wainwright...

Adam was very highly regarded at the time of the trade, which is why the Braves were able to land a very, very good player in J.D. Drew. He had no performance issues, like Gilmartin. Gilmartin is being traded for a bench piece.

Very different from Gilmartin. The Braves are, in a sense, "giving up" on Gilmartin. That was not the case for Wainwright. The Braves had a pretty good idea he would be a very good pitcher, but thought they could improve their chances at a championship by bringing in Drew. Drew was stellar in that one year for Atlanta, but it didn't work out for the team as a whole.

Doumit is under contract just for 2014, at $3.5 million.

Rest assured, they are trying to trade him.

And it won't be for much more than a bucket of balls if they do. If not, I believe they would at least consider releasing him if he started out (say, for a couple of months) poorly again.

Because the Braves aren't the Yankees.

They can't afford to just eat $27 million dollars...they have to make every effort to squeeze life out of that contract.
Like I said, if he stinks again, I think the Braves would consider taking the sunk cost and plugging in La Stella. But they will at least try one more time.
