Fly Delta

Dec 29, 2022, 6:24 AM

While in Seattle a few weeks ago my wife and I decided to fly to Vegas for a few days. Our flight was at 8 a.m. The gate agent announced that the flight was over booked and two volunteers were needed and each would receive a $600 debit card. As the next flight was only 2 hour later we volunteered. As boarding began we were notified that two people had not shown up, and we would have to board and would lose our debit cards.

Moments before takeoff, the agent came down the aisle, told us that the missing passengers had shown up and we would have to give up our seats. We were escorted off the plane looking as if we were terrorists or criminals of some sort. Angrily I visited the restroom and returned to my seat in the waiting area to join my wife. She informed me that she had bad news and good news. I said give me the bad news first. Our 10 a.m. flight was canceled and the next flight would be 8 hours later. The good news was that the gate attendant was so upset by the whole episode that he gave each of us $1,500 in debit cards. DELTA ROCKS!

If my math is correct you both made $187.50 an hour to do some people watching. Sounds like a good day to me. Congratulations!

Re: Fly Delta

I had a different experience flying Delta once. I was flying with a couple of guys from work from Augusta GA to Seattle WA through ATL. We boarded the first plane out of Augusta on time and they closed the door, thus the flight was considered "on time". Then we sat on the tarmac for an hour because ATL wouldn't clear us to take off. By the time we got to ATL we missed our connecting flight.

So Delta switched us to United and rerouted us to Seattle through Denver. They said our checked baggage would be automatically swtched. We took off on time, but it took like an hour longer than it was supposed to due to a strong head wind or miscalculation or something and we got there just in time to see the plane to Seattle backing away from the gate.

So United switched us to American and rerouted us to Seattle through Salt Lake City. They said our baggage would be automatically switched. We got to Salt Lake and luckily onto the last flight to Seattle.

Of course when we got to Seattle, one guy's luggage had arrived but the other two had not. We filled out the form and they said they would deliver it to our hotel later that night after it arrived. I told them we were driving around the bay another three hours to our hotel and they said no problem. Of course I also knew we were on the last flight and didn't hold much hope to see our suitcases that night.

Sure enough, the next morning no suitcases. So the other guy and I wore our same travel clothes, unshaven to our meeting. When we returned to the hotel later that night, amazingly our luggage was at the hotel front desk.

However no debit cards were with it.

That sounds frustrating, but a pretty solid win in the end

Yeah, everybody has horror stories about every single airline so I can’t take them all with a grain of salt except for Southwest. While Delta is not the most upscale or classy airline, I find in general, they perform reasonably well on time and being in Atlanta there’s a big dog so if you wanna go somewhere, that’s usually the best way.

The problems with Airlines are the laws that were written to protect the Airlines.

When you purchase a ticket from an Airline, if you ever bothered to read the incredibly small print that was written by teams and teams and teams of lawyers, what that incredibly small print reads is, “This Airline will get you where you want to go at some point within the next 365 days”.

That astonishingly low bar of customer service is custom made, on purpose, for the service provider to abuse the customer and that is exactly what happens. It’s NOT an accident, an oversight or an Act of God. It was written into law this way. The Airline has the right to take your money and get you where you want to go, whenever it suits them within the next year. The customer has the right to not be killed by the Airline (a right you were born with), that’s the agreement.

The Airlines wrote these laws, Congress passed these laws after the Airlines bought them and we voted the scumbags that could be bought, into office. THAT’S THE PROBLEM.

Do post back on your purchase experience

Dec 29, 2022, 9:06 AM

I was left in Philly by an airline (they closed the gates 10m earlier than they should have) and offered me vouchers for $800 and a hotel for my hassles. I decided to use them that Summer for a family vacation to Mexico. Tickets were $425 online. However, the vouchers had to be executed AT THE AIRPORT.

So, I take off work to get it done. I knew the flight numbers I wanted. When I got to the payment part, the same tickets at the counter were $680. So the vouchers immediately lost $250/ticket because they weren’t consistent currency. I bought them, because it’s still discounted. But it re-opened up the wound the vouchers were supposed to heal.

I have a severe mistrust in vouchers moving forward. I’m interested in other’s lived experiences though.

I travel every other week on American. Sometimes you are early, sometimes you are on time, sometimes you are delayed, sometimes you are cancelled. They are in the same boat as the rest of the world, short staffed. They work long hours away from their families and 9/10 attendants are very friendly. I will never understand why people stand at the gate and get mad at the gate agent. It's not their fault your plane is delayed. You will never be "stranded" in an airport, there's another plane coming eventually. No need to get worked up over something that you have no control over. As far as vouchers, if I have the time to spare, I will take a travel voucher to hop a later flight. Last one I took was $900 to leave 3 hours later. Pretty easy money.
