For the record, my thoughts on DJU.

I did not watch him play a single down this year at OR ST. So, I have no first hand knowledge of how he looked.

When he entered the portal he was not on my radar as being the type of QB Norvell would be looking for. But, I'm no X and O guru, so what do I know? Norvell has a proven track record of bringing in guys who were not highly thought of and turning them into NFL prospects. (Trey Benson and Johnny Williams this year. He was the first to jump on the Jared Verse train. Kyle Morlock looks like he could be a good one. He started with a back up DE from UGA who turned into a first round draft pick in one year.) He didn't recruit Jordan Travis, but he did develop him from a guy who had zero confidence and wanted to either quit football or change positions and turn him into a Heisman candidate. So, I'm gonna be very slow to say Norvell doesn't know what he's doing.

Here is what I am hearing as to why Norvell is interested.
1. His stats are pretty good at OSU, better than they were at Clemson. He might just be a "late bloomer."
2. Norvell's offense is a run first offense. He doesn't want to throw it 40 times a game.
3. His running offense utilizes counters, including QB counters, and zone reads (inside and outside). he wants a QB who is not afraid to pull the ball and run it himself. DJU has the size and athletic ability to do that.

So, time will tell. If DJU is really the target for FSU I suspect we will hear so in the next 24-48 hours. If we don't I think that means that DJU is a "fall back position" at best.

Me? I want the kid from BC who made us look silly this year. (Just joking. He's a freshman and even if he entered the portal I imagine he wouldn't be interested in FSU or vice Versa. Brock Glenn will be a redshirt freshman and we have the highest recruited QB we've had under Norvell entering school in January. The general train of thought is FSU is looking for a 1-and-doner.)

bretfsu, he snatched a player up this time in DJU that's going to cause him to regret that he did for a very long time. Dabo gave that kid chances that he didn't actually deserve with hoping that he would prove the nay sayers wrong, and he kept proving the nay sayers R I G H T as he will do at FSU!!!!

Watched him a bunch this year...our worthless cable in Texas has 4 pac whatever channels...he was the same Ole DJ at OSS...poor late decisions...slow footed with a requisite drop step...and he played against poor defensive competition...bet OSU is tickled he is gone...his overall numbers were virtually the same...ACC is probably lacking chops! Maybe he will opt out like everyone else at FSU!

I do believe from what I seen he was better suited for that system at OSU. He was just out of his element in trying to run Elliot/Streeter’s offenses. To be fair like Cade we have not had a plethora of talent on the outside in a few years but he still was not proficient with the easy plays imo. Too slow.

I always scratch my head when someone comments the style of the offense was the problem. First, he struggled throwing simple passes which has nothing to do with the style of offense. Second, his stats were better at CU than last year playing in the style of offense supposedly better suited to his game

He seemed prettt comfortable in the offense at ND breaking a record that night…he has all the physical tools to be a good one and look at all the 5th and 6th year guys that have blown up recently. I suspect if he’s does indeed end up at fsu if they have him some help around him that he will look the best he has in college yet… hopefully not against us but I fully expect our def to know how to defend him when we go down there .

Exactly, the kid has to strong of an arm that he can't control when passing to his receivers at any level down field, every ball he throws is thrown at full strength, he was never able to learn what it meant to have the right touch on the FB, and he just ripped it to every receiver he was throwing to!!!

The difference being he looked a lot better under center handing it off or play action. Stats would be a little harder to compare not knowing what he had playmaker wise at OSU. When I watched he just looked to be more in his comfort zone playing that style and not having to use his legs as much. That was my only point.

It’s so funny how he wanted to be closer to the west coast and now is coming to Florida.

For me he was best his freshman year, then something happened. Was it nil deal with Dr Pepper and Bojangles? Or his name being mentioned for Heisman? Idk. He gained bad weight, footwork was sloppy, and honestly, he lost some games in his career so he wasn’t always winning even when he got his stats. I think Watson and Lawrence won a lot more even before Clemson, unlike DJ.

Despite this I think we did a great job game planning with him and insulating him from making as many mistakes. If fsu used him like a Tebow and could keep him healthy he could be a real problem, regardless of if he put up big numbers. Our red zone numbers were mostly good with him.

I just don’t think the killer instinct is there.

Personally I wouldn't put my job in his hands, which is what the FSU coach would be doing. He isn't terrible but he also isn't gonna lead any team to the playoffs and he is as good as he'll ever be so its not like he's a young guy with upside. Also you'll have him one season and then you're starting all over.

intent of that guy being the starting QB next year then Norvell is making a statement about his "culture" and it ain't a good one IMO.

Brock Glenn was a 4 star recruit that Norvell recruited. The kid committed to FSU to be developed and by all indications he made huge leaps of improvement in the 3 weeks between the ACC Champ game and the Orange Bowl.

DJ ain't going to FSU to be a "backup" and if Norvell brings him in then he is essentially telling Brock Glenn - "I don't believe in you and don't think we can develop you into a starting QB over the next 8 months". Essentially he's telling Glenn "you are nothing but a backup" because he ain't gonna get any meaningful first team reps once DJ steps on campus.

There is a reason Rodemaker hit the portal instead of playing in the Orange Bowl. Norvell was already shopping the portal for next year's starting QB and Rodemaker got the message loud and clear from Norvell - "I'm not going to invest my time and energy in you to be FSU's QB1" and Rodemaker said "bye"...

IMO Norvell is reinforcing a transactional culture of "no loyalty" that bit him in the a.s.s in the Orange Bowl. If he keeps going to the portal for the majority of his starters (as he has done) then eventually it is going to negatively hit him on the recruiting trail as well. Why would any highly ranked recruit or their parents want to go to FSU where player development is always secondary to portal transfer starters??

The very idea that DJ has something else to show us and will somehow magically improve when he gets “into a different system” or “plays for a different coach” is pretty comical at this point. DJ is the greatest case of “almost” we have seen. His size and arm strength keep leading folks like a carrot on a string…almost there, almost there, almost there. He has hit his ceiling and IF he is useful to a program just-as-he-is, then he has a good fit.

Cam Ward would have been a much better option but I suppose DJ was the best remaining QB available. He'll be a massive drop from Jordan Travis in most every way. I don't say this to slam DJ, it's just true. At Oregon State, he was mostly the same as at Clemson: Crazy strong arm, shaky accuracy on medium and touch passes, doesn't read defenses well, needs very good pass protection to be successful. One improvement this year was noticeably better mobility when he ran the ball.

Oregon State had a very good, seasoned O-line. He'll need the same at FSU.

IMO, DJ is a near-finished product. Good luck.

I think DJ was better last year, in terms of confidence, and even git better at reading receivers…..

I agree with comments above, needs a good O-line and he had more time..

I will also say, he was rock solid and great when playing lower teams, in games where they needed him to step up to win (competition was rough), same old thing…. He didn’t lose any games for them, but worse, he didn’t win any that they needed….

The dude will likely leave college with $2M or close to it fo this year and next, how long d=will it take most people on this board to get close to that..

Say what you will, he is a P5 starting QB somewhere, last I saw thats in the top 120 of players in the world…..

I do doubt he will be blue to lead them to an ACC championship or playoff…. Just doesn’t have the CPU for that…

Norvell doesn't rely on a QB run system.

Jan 1, 2024, 11:09 PM

He uses the zone read, but it is not the bread and butter of his run game. He is a run first offense. His "base" running play is the counter.

Travis made a lot of runs on broken pass plays. He was athletic enough to avoid the rush and run for his life.

He does run enough zone reads where the QB has to be willing to pull the ball and take off, but it's not an offense where the QB should be running the ball 10+ times a game.

Look, I'm not sold on DJU. Our OL has to get a lot better to run Norvell's offense. Norvell prefers a drop back passer who can run, not a running QB who can pass.

Time will tell. I'm hopeful that DJ has a great year at FSU. But, I'm not one of those Nole fans you would see if you went to a typical message board shouting, "We got our guy! The playoffs are a lock next year! DJ for Heisman!"

In all honesty I have always wished nothing but the best for DJ and other’s who left Clemson for reasons only those athletes know their reason for leaving. I don’t think the TP was initially designed for players to transfer from program to program to program. That extra year of eligibility due to Covid may have been a good idea without the TP. The TP is one of the worst rules added to college athletics.

As regards to his play at Oregon State was about the same as was at Clemson. Problems with turnovers at Clemson and at Oregon State.

DJ I believe is searching for something I do not think he will find at FSU. He evidently did not find it at Oregon State. In fact I feel he quit on his teammates leaving before the BG.

I think his best option was to stay at Clemson even if he ended up as the backup or had to share time with Cade. IMO under Dabo’s guidance DJ would be in a better position to face life management st likely without football since he is not NFL talent. Dabo could even have worked with DJ possibly setting him up for a career in coaching.

Once he went to Oregon State he should have stayed there honoring his transfer commitment to Oregon State. However some idiotic Federal Judge ruled that the TP is wide open !

I don’t think DJU will be an upgrade or game changer for FSU, a program in Chaos. They want out of the ACC, many players are hitting the TP, and FSU may be having financial problems too. ???

Honestly, I believe college athletes were better off without NIL, the TP and other rule changes will be long term benefits for these athletes. Especially team sports such as football.

I’m just being honest. I think you take a major step back. You had a lot returning this year plus Travis and I knew the ACC would go through FSU this season. You seem to be losing a lot and I felt you needed to land an elite QB in the portal.

DJU is a game manager and doesn’t do well under pressure. You will definitely have to be a run heavy team and your Defensive will need to be a top 10 unit because I don’t see the offense with DJ being a top 25 unit.

Zone reads were one of the issues with DJ. Decision making was slow as was processing what he was seeing. That is something that should improve with experience. I didn’t watch him much this year so maybe he improved?

His experience alone makes him a very serviceable QB.

FSU fans will be excited until he causes 3 TOs in one game.

DJ is slow, indecisive and inaccurate in the screen game....not a great fit for what you do.

Which DJ are you going to get?

The at ND DJ that threw for +400 yards? Or, the home against the Coots DJ that threw 8 of 27?

MLB would be a more attractive offer. Less chance for injury, he can make money right away. I don't think another year is going to make him NFL draftable.

DJU is slow as molasses dripping in Antarctica. He is not the running QB you want.
