Frank Beamer Story -- 2005

Reading that Michael Vick is coaching DJ this summer brought back memories ...

Way back in 2005, I attended the ACC hoops tourney in Washington DC and stayed at a nice hotel in Alexandria. One morning I hit the sauna with my UVA buddy and who walks in -- Va Tech coach Frank Beamer. The ACC had announced Va Tech was joining the conference in 2004, so we welcomed him aboard as ACC alums. We were fairly restrained from playing 20 questions with Beamer but still found Beamer to be friendly, in a good mood and fairly talkative. Beamer said he was excited to join the conference and his wife was even more excited as she had grown up an ACC basketball fan.

Beamer told us while Marcus Vick had run into problems off the field, he expected Marcus would start in 2005 and hoped for the best. He said Marcus was spending the summer in ATL with big bro Michael, and he hoped some maturity would rub off on little brother. Well, Marcus did start in 2005, but the off-the-field issues did not go away, and of course Michael ran into his own troubles. All that said, Michael Vick is 42 years old now, he knows the game, and his experience can only help DJ on and off the field.
