Why was Mack upset at his schedule?

They got 7 home games, and another in Charlotte vs the Coots.
Outside their Open date being early (after their 4th game), I don't see anything terrible about it except their last 2 games of the season at at Clemson, then at NC State.

I can’t read his mind, but the nonconference schedule is actually set by the school in advance, so the 7 home dates and the cross-division rivalry dates were already expected. The schools give the ACC 9 weeks in which to place 8 conference games (with the understanding that Week #13 is reserved for their rivalry game with NCSU).
So I would guess that getting Clemson as his cycled cross division foe, playing us late in the season, ending the season with his 2 hardest games, and (as you said) the early bye would be what he’s upset about.
In other words, he got the worst possible scenario.

Open date being that early would be what I would be angriest about if I was Mack. Just look at our 2015 team because we had a bye week after Game 3 that year, and we were on fumes just to get to the playoff after the FSU game at home. We were so banged up and thin on the depth chart, I remmeber Boulware playing over 900 snaps that season (if not more, it's been a few years) and being in a sling for most of it.

their 3 biggest games of the season are all away from FSU (LSU in Orlando, on the road here and at Florida). Bye week is week 4 so they will have to play at least 8 games in a row to end the season (9 if they make the title game) and they have two stretches this year of playing conference opponents back to back on the road (At BC, then here, 28 Oct At Wake, 4 Nov at Pitt).

Again, the ACC does not schedule the non-con games; the schools do that themselves. So if they complain, they can just blame their own AD.
The conference games are all home-and-home, so they get us in Death Valley every second year. That’s entirely predictable.
What is controlled by the ACC is 1) Off dates, 2) the cross division game, and 3) the sequence of conference opponents. So I consider your last statement to be valid. The other difficulties are of their own making.

Does he realize UNC won't play Clemson and FL ST in the same regular season...ever! We get FL ST & ND along with WF(certainly good the last 2 years). Would he trade Pitt and UVA for any 2 of those teams?

I like Mack but he is a whiner. Why would any serious football player go to a BB school where they lose all interest after BB begins. Mack wants to have a great season so he can quit.
