FSU's Rodemaker transfer

This may have been discussed at the time, but I was not online and missed it if it was. So, apologies if Germans.

Why transfer before the bowl game? Seems like this would be the ultimate opportunity to boost your resume and take on the defending 2x national champs. If he's as good as he thinks, then even if they lose but he plays a solid game, it increases his stock.

Then I read this article on MSN from USA Today Sports. Maybe I'm reading more into it than I should, but here's the key quote to me: "with the unforgiving nature of the calendar relative to transfer portal players and bowl games and limited opportunities remaining for transfer quarterbacks, the family felt this move was in Tate’s best interest. Florida State has quite publicly recruited multiple quarterbacks in this transfer cycle, so Tate and his family reluctantly came to the decision that now was the time to move on.” Did you read this the same way I did? That FSU was bringing in more QBs was a motivating factor in transferring, which tells me he was afraid of the competition and potentially losing his starting job, which was only "won" when the starter went down?

If they're worried about "limited opportunities remaining for transfer quarterbacks," I'd think that any coaches looking for a QB would gladly wait to see not only how someone performed in a BIG bowl game (well, it used to be big - not so much anymore with 2nd & 3rd string starting for FSU at almost every skill position) but also to acknowledge their loyalty to their program. But what do I know.

I just don't get it. Seems like playing in the bowl game would be a win-win for someone in his position. He's played pretty well in relief of Travis and a good game against UGa would be huge for him. But sounds more like this kid is scared of how a poor game might impact him and how he may not win the competition in the QB room. I wouldn't want him on my team.

I always feel at first glance that the kids leaving are scared of competition or spoiled. I just thought about this though, maybe one of the QBs they are bringing in got offered a large NIL deal, much larger than what Rodemaker has been offered. That would lead him to think that no matter what, they’ve chosen their starter for next season. I’d like to think that he would stay and beat out the transfers to get his own big NIL deal, but it’d be tough to watch your coach begging a QB whose never been there to come and throwing $ signs at them. It would make anybody feel like they were getting pushed back.

It would be like an NFL player not getting offered a new contract, but a Free Agent coming in with a Huge 1-2 year offer.

It's punkish that he will walk out on his teammates that has been there for him during his time at FSU, and if I was his teammate at whatever school he transfers to, I would call him out every day for walking out on his prior teammates when they needed him the most.

Things like this just don't set well with me, and I can honestly say that I've never in my lifetime ever walked away from anybody that needed me. Knowing myself as well as I do, I know that I could never do something like that and knowing that others, of just somebody was depending on me. I'm made from a better raising than that to cause suffering of others bc of my actions, I just can't do that, but I've never been a one way Joe!!!

Well let's see...the coach leaves JT in every game to pump up the score and style points...still have some games where the struggle...nobody should struggle vs UAB but FSU was down 14 to zip...JT hurt and the replacement, unheralded, untried and unplayed is handed the game...puts a 58 spot on UAB...sure Travis would have won but with no points and a broken leg not today...maybe Tate figures with a concussion looming and a brain dead university, it's time to show his skills elsewhere...little did he know! Hopes are he will land somewhere that needs a QB...not USC for sure!

QB transfer they have coming from Texas (with likely major NIL bucks), that freshman is not going to get first-team reps when Spring practice starts.

Absolutely FSUs lusting for transfer QBs drove his decision and its justified

Screw them they’re not giving him a chance to compete for the job they’re telling him he’s not good enough so we’re gonna get someone else. If your girlfriend said, “hey give me a month to play the field, go on some dates, and after the new year I’ll let you know if you’re good enough for me”, would you be cool with that? Oh and by the way her sister is getting married in December and she needs you to be her escort and parade around like nothing is happening; nah figure it out for yourself. The writing is on the wall for Rodemaker he’s being pushed out so why not get started right away finding a landing spot.

In addition to those points, injury is also a concern.

Probably moreso in this game than another random regular season game, considering FSU’s opt-outs and UGA lack of.

I guess he figures it’s better to skip the game and get a middling NIL deal with Akron than play, get injured, and get nothing.

Throw players in the middle of a business situation and they’ll make business decisions. Lots of analysis around risk-reward, cost-benefit, opportunity costs, etc. it’s the perfect example of “don’t hate the playas, hate the game.”

Maybe he has a good idea where he is going? Maybe he knew FSU was going to get curb stomped so he decided not to lower his value?

Can't Blame Him

This is the product of the current state of CFB. Coaches have to manage the roster and kids have to determine what's best for them.

Folks can scream and beat their chest about how this could be a statement game but this ain't the same CFB as 5-10+ years ago where this would have more of an impact moving forward thanks to opt outs and the transfer portal.

That said, I hate that CFB is becoming more and more like a semi-pro system where allegiance for a program is no more than an NIL deal for a year before players head out for the next best deal.

Hope a fix is in the pipeline to tame this current beast.

I don't blame him for moving on . No QB FSU has recruiting in the portal would be coming in to sit the bench . Kid saw the writing on the wall and did what was best for himself

He wasn’t a high recruit and after 4 years has hit his ceiling as serviceable P5 backup / G5ish starter. FSU knows they can’t go into next season with the guys that played post Travis battling for the starting spot. They are looking for an upgrade to fill a year while developing Glenn & the new signee.

With that Rodemaker is trying to find a landing spot going into the spring semester. The issue is caused with the timing of the transfer portal in relation to bowl games. They really need to move the bowl games up and open the portal after.
