Gamecocks lose starting LB Stone Blanton to transfer

In a surprise announcement Saturday night, USC starting middle linebacker Stone Blanton announced on social media that he has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. Blanton came to USC from Mississippi as a football/baseball athlete but focused totally on football in his two seasons with the Gamecocks.
Blanton played in 24 of a possible 25 games starting all 12 games this season. He finished his USC career with 59 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. He also picked off a pass this season against Jacksonville State and returned it 88 yards for a touchdown. He was fifth on the team in tackles this season with 52
Blanton becomes the 19th Gamecock to enter the Portal since the end of the season. Five others have announced for the NFL Draft. He’s the first defensive starter to leave the program via the Portal.

Yes Yes Yes.
Portal players, as evidenced by their actions of using the portal to change teams, are proven to have less of a ‘team attachment’ than those who are not portal players.
Sure, there are plenty of HS players who will hit the portal a first time because of playing time concerns or NIL bribes. It is not easy to predict which incoming HS players will go that route.
(I’m not talking about HS player arrivals that, if they get buried on the depth chart but yet are still intent on working their way up to getting some meaningful game time snaps, who get ‘encouragement’ from their coach to seek PT elsewhere. Refer to Deion Sanders, Kirby Smart, etc for how they do this.)
What we are witnessing at S.Carolina is the embodiment of your ‘live by the portal, die by the portal’ statement. Sure, some teams get lucky for a year or two, but let’s see which of those teams that have built their roster via the portal achieve a standard of sustainable excellence.
