Garrett Riley

I’m just curious about something. I don’t know if he had any HC offers after the national championship game, but I am almost certain that he must have. Given the job he did with that offense and Max Dugan, and of course his last name in association with Lincoln Riley. If he did, why would he take another OC position? Granted it’s Clemson, but you usually don’t see a guy like him transition to the same position somewhere else when they’re that good.

He got a major $$ uptick with his move to Clemson. If he gets the results at Tigertown, the calls will come quickly.

IMO not every assistant coach makes a really good HC. There have been many examples of OC’s and DC’s making the jump unsuccessfully. But they move back into a coordinator’s position and do very well. I believe some of the best coaches are assistant’s. Not everyone can succeed as the Head Coach. I am pulling for Tony Elliott and Brent Venables but we want know for a few more years. Successful position coaches does not always translate into a successful move up to a coordinator or a head coach’s position.

Maybe some assistant coaches do not want the pressure of being a HC. Will all of the above being said many fans assume longtime coordinators have not been offered a HC job. Many are happy where they are in the coaching hierarchy. Some assistants make the jump to HC because of the money. However, with assistants salaries increasing maybe some will be happy as an assistant.

I believe many times assistant coaches jump into HCing because of the money or that’s the progression expected in the coaching profession. And It’s what fans expect. Some assistant coaches move up the coaching ladder because of pressure from other coaches or even family.

I would rather make less money and be happy and content in life. Family is very important to me. Time will tell if BV and Tony Elliott made the right moves. I wish them both much success and happiness as first time HC’s.

I understand everything you said and agree with it, but I’ll find it hard to believe if Garrett doesn’t take a job somewhere after this 3 year contract is up. Maybe at ol’ war eagle when Freeze screws up the rules again. Low blow.

But I do agree

I have a strong feeling Garrett Riley is here to install a new offense and expose some of the coaches on the current staff to a fresh look, he's here to setup the long term. Dabo understands this guy's goal and it's mutual. As long as when Garrett leaves he doesn't take the heir to his position this will work out. This is as much teaching the coaches as it is teaching the players

Would you rather?

Have a 1-2 million dollar head coaching job at a struggling school where you might do well enough in 3-4 years to get a top head coaching job at 3-5 million?

OR

Have a 1-2 million OC job at a school that is already successful where you might vault to a 3-5 million head coaching job in 1-3 years if that success continues?
