Just made my first trip ever to an Aldi

Oct 22, 2022, 8:17 PM

What a bizarre mix of bougie and UDP. I like it.

I love Aldi.

Oct 22, 2022, 8:24 PM

I shop there on a weekly basis. Some things I get at the regular store but most things I can get at Aldi. $1.99 for bagels that would be $5 at other store etc etc. it adds up

It's really good for basic staples. I've tried some of the meats but haven't had any luck.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Only meats I buy there is chicken or salted Italian meats

Oct 22, 2022, 8:45 PM

You def right on the staples.

Yeah, they do have some decent Italian snacks. I have an Aldi, Lidl, Harris Teeter, and Food Lion all within 2 miles of my home. I go to different ones for different things.

Discount meat has NEVER worked…

Just sayin.

You should try Lidl. It's for us more upper crust poors.

I Aldi on the reg. Good stuff

Oct 22, 2022, 8:27 PM

Catch bulk meat at good prices sometimes.

I agree on your assessment

Did you find the Girl Scout cookies?

Oct 22, 2022, 8:32 PM

Oh yeah. I wish we had one here. It helped me pay off my student loans.

The Aldi @ Hartwell Village would not let the Girl Scouts

Oct 23, 2022, 9:44 AM

set up in front of their store.

There were NO Girl Scouts.

Oct 23, 2022, 2:45 PM

Only Girl Scout cookies (not same brand but same exact cookies) sold inside Aldi… for $1.99 in 2018 in N. Mississippi when I lived there.

When people with multiple Land Rovers become Aldi shoppers, that tells me all I need to know about the current state of inflation.

Aldi is the bomb. Produce is a crap shoot.

Oct 22, 2022, 8:51 PM

As are most staples.

But if you want German chocolates, nuts, cookies, German and European foods, and funnily named copies of popular beers, it’s great.

That said, I almost never go to ours. Wish it was closer by.

Aldi here has good produce, just a very limited selection.

Oct 23, 2022, 9:43 AM

Publix or Harris Teeter is still the best option for produce or meat overall...unless I make a trip to Bush N' Vine in York. That's the king daddy of produce around here but requires some planning and effort because it's on the other side of York almost to Filbert. They have a small annex stand just down the road but good stuff is gone early. Lidl is tops for cheese, with HT being second. Unfortunately, Walmart remains the best and cheapest option for staples and gluten-free items for the Mrs. Celiac disease has turned grocery shopping into quite an adventure but at least we've managed to implement a system. Restaurants are still an overwhelming challenge.

Definitely still a go-to for steaks.

Oct 23, 2022, 10:13 AM

The big secret in butcher shops is the Mexican grocery store Las Americas on Cherry Road. It's not where I'd go to get a top-shelf steak, but anything else is in play there.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bet they have a killer flank steak.***

My staple for the last few years has been beef shoulder cuts

Oct 23, 2022, 10:21 AM

from Publix. It's about the only grocery store that puts them out, but there's not a better all-around cut for being tender, being flavorful, and being reasonably priced.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

just make sure and eat any food you buy there within 24

Unemployment and being poor

Oct 23, 2022, 1:16 PM

can be difficult and nothing to joke about. I suggest you try Indeed or try to grow a LinkedIn profile. It can be hard when you just lost a job and Aldi is a great “in between” but I think you should just go to Whole Foods and then cut the chicken 30 ways to make it last.

I know that times are tough and here for you if needed.

Bread and frozen food is about it for me there

Oct 23, 2022, 2:04 PM

their bread selection is surprisingly good. Paying $3 for a brand-name loaf I usually halfway finish is a no-go for me, the Aldi $1 loaf is very satisfactory.

Sometimes I'll try one of their exotic flavor off-brand chips, but usually a letdown.

Not much else in there appealing to me.
