Given the news, it's no wonder folks are upset.

Sep 6, 2000, 12:00 AM

It's just another month in TigerTown. Clemson University was named Time's Public College of the Year and was listed by Newsweek as the 38th Rated Public University. Another class of fine students matriculated in mid-August and, in most cases, unknowingly made a lifelong commitment to the Clemson family.

It's just another football season for Clemson University. The Tigers, only two short years removed from dead last in the ACC, were ranked 8th in the country by Sports Illustrated. The Tigers also made nearly everyone's preseason top twenty. IPTAY just ended a record breaking fundraising year. The East End of Death Valley has now been reworked. Howard's Rock has a beautiful new home and the brickwork above the Hill gives promise of a new look to an old place we all love. Over 100 luxury boxes at Death Valley are sold out for 2000 giving the Tigers the largest and best luxury seating accommodations in the country. Sixty-five folks have their names on the waiting list for the luxury suites in Death Valley. 58,000 season tickets were sold for the 2000 season putting smallish Clemson University among the top ten schools in America in preseason ticket sales. With seven attractive home games, the Tigers are likely to crack the national top ten in home attendance this year. The football coaching staff, despite attractive offers from all over, returned intact to coach this year's edition of Tiger football.

In August, Terry Witherspoon, a partial qualifier four years ago, graduated and earned the right to play a fourth season for the Tigers. Witherspoon passed on an early dash to the NFL to fulfill a commitment to his family to get his education. For the second time in as many years, Tiger football players graduated at a rate better than 75% of the Division 1 teams in America and made the NCAA top twenty five list in that category. The team GPR for the spring term was the highest recorded since records have been maintained.

Last Saturday, the Tigers beat the Citadel 38-0 in an opening day game which saw essentially every player in on the action. The victory, in which the first team played no more than a 2.5 quarters, was the fifth largest opening day win for Clemson in at least the past 40 years. Tiger QB Woodrow Dantzler set an all-time single game mark going 16 of 17 for three scores in a performance unlikely to be repeated for decades.

MEANWHILE, the world of Tigernet is full of whining, moaning, groaning, and bitching over just about everything in the whole wide world of sports. People are calling for the head of the PR spokesperson, the admissions office, the compliance officer, half the Board of Trustees, and the Athletic Director. Folks have made a special effort to share their own dissatisfaction with parking, traffic flow, the ice cream at the Ag Center, Woodrow's footwork, Simmon's jitters, Zachary's speed, and the number of penalties recorded by the Tigers in the opener. A special high volume whine has been unleashed in the direction of the pre- and post-game radio shows, the TV network and the number and name of the stations which carry Tiger football. Some soothsayers have spotted the head coach headed out the door and apparently observed clandestine meetings of assorted groups intent on wrecking Tiger football for generations to come.

Geez, people get a grip. It doesn't get a lot better than this. I think that many of you who are who are so busy playing Chicken Little need to save something for the bad times.

Go Tigers!!
