Good argument for Alabama being in?

So, first off - I firmly believe that FSU should have been in, let me get that out of the way right now. All undefeated conference champions should have gotten in. It's super straightforward.

But for the past week, I haven't heard a single compelling argument regarding why Alabama deserves to be in, until this morning. And I think it's a decent one.

Effectively, the argument is that teams shouldn't be punished for scheduling hard out-of-conference opponents. For example, if they had scheduled another cupcake (like they usually do), there wouldn't have been any controversy. Further, if we punish teams for scheduling a Top-10 matchup, teams will stop scheduling hard out-of-conference match-ups, and that would be a bummer.

Therefore, the argument was made that when it comes to the playoffs, really only the conference schedule should be looked at in depth. Since Alabama went undefeated in conference play, they should be in. And under this logic, it's actually Texas that should be left out since they lost to OU.

I'm not sure I 100% buy it, but it is the best argument I've heard so far, as I do want more top-tier out-of-conference games moving forward. Thoughts?

This argument makes it even more FSU should be in. They best LSU and Fla(you don’t Fla is going to struggle) and Texas has not been good except these last two years over the last 12 or so. Straight Texas beat Bama that’s it. They have same losses. Oklahoma is not a slouch.

And FSU beat those 2 SEC opponents on the road while Bama lost at home.

Merely SCHEDULING tough OOC games should not be used as a criteria to get you

into the Playoffs, WINNING is what is supposed to count. Had Bama WON that Texas matchup, with all else staying the same, then Bama AND FSU are both in the Playoffs, cut and dried, no arguments.

Now, do I really believe that? Aw, Hal Naw. Then, with only FSU to screw over, the argument would have been made that GEORGIA deserved to be in over FSU, same injury story, plus "We were undefeated and ranked #1 the WHOLE YEAR!" In just about any other year, Georgia WOULD have gotten in.

I'm just glad we are going to 12 teams, so that next year, we just get to beyotch over the BIG and the SEC fighting to get four teams into those Top Four spots for byes. Because, you know, ahead of time, that is what is going to happen.

You can mark it down. SEC and BIG get 2-3 byes every year. But at least 8 more teams get a shot to disprove espns propaganda. To me it should be the 4 conf champs get a bye because the others all get a bye during championship week.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But WHICH four conference champs should get a bye? The Committee has already

demoted the ACC out of the Power Four by their actions this year. We could get jumped by the Sun Belt next year.

What part is propaganda? The SEC wins it all almost all the time? What we see doesn't happen - doesn't really happen its just talk? The SEC stocks the NFL with talent or ESPN just tells us that's where they played college ball? There's not that much football interest in the SEC - its a basketball conference and ESPN makes it look like those big SEC stadiums are full and conference attendance numbers are vastly inflated because everyone in interested about basketball all the time.

You guys are on the outside looking in. If you weren't such a fool signing that GOR TWICE and were in the B1G or SEC you would see things differently.

I thought the byes go to the 4 highest ranked conference champs. Did something change??

Top 7 teams.

An argument can be made for any one of those 7 teams as to why they should be in. An argument can be made for any one of those 7 teams as to why they should not be in.

Ohio State is a better team and certainly a more consistent team than Alabama has been this year.

Again the easy questions are was the uga schedule very hard and if the rolls were reversed would Bama be penalized for looking bad in the last 2-3 games without their starting QB, but oh wait ? did someone mention the Auburn game? How did Bama look against them with their staring QB! It’s ESPN driven and the SEC Network driven and until Fox stabilizes the market ESPN will drive college football!

There is no argument or reasoning. The committee left Georgia out. Therefore the four best teams is a lie. In fact, they ranked FSU ahead of UGA. Another lie. So it should have been the four teams who earned it based on what they did.

You mean like win all your games and conf championship? Georgia did neither. Must of overlooked those little details.

Thats not what hes saying. Hes saying they did neither

of these things- they didn’t put the most deserving teams in, nor did they put the best teams in. So what they did makes no sense.

If it was best teams, Georgia should have been over maybe a Washington or Texas. Georgia had won like 25 games in a row, won the last two national titles, are loaded with talent, and were the number 1 team until they lost to a top 10 team by 3 points. They are definitely a top 4 team still.

If it was most deserving teams, FSU should have been in over Bama.

They did neither.

There is no objective argument. They have a common opponent, both won by 2 scores - Bama at home by 14, FSU neutral site by 10. SOR FSU 3 Bama 4. Bama has the better win UGA, but lost at home.

The “Bama is better, just look how they looked after Travis went down” crowd conveniently fail to mention that FSU looked better against UF than UA did against Auburn.

So, they are left with “eye test”, SEC! SEC! SEC! and who would you rather play.

Counterpoint:

Texas was automatically in because they beat Bama.

You can't both reward Texas for beating Bama and reward Bama for losing to Texas...

If you want to look at it that the game doesn't matter, then Bama is in (best win/no bad loss) and Texas is out.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

lol. Texas sucked ### when that game was scheduled.

You need to notify Grahame Neff or whoever does Clemson schedule of this and tell Clemson to stop scheduling 2 fcs opponents that does nothing for our strength of schedule. We don’t need to be helpful big brother and helping these little schools in the state of S.C. by helping them with the $$ from gate receipts if you know what I mean.

Haha. The first time in years Bama scheduled a nonconference game that was a decent opponent and they lost it. Great logic there. I think FSU got ripped off, but I will be pulling for Bama and/or Washington going forward.

How can you argue that teams should not be punished for playing tough out-of-conference opponents and then suggest that possibly Texas should be left out. Shouldn't they be given credit too for scheduling a tough out-of-conference team ........ and in this case won the game.
