A backdoor way to even out the conferences

after the crying about FSU being booted. In the 12-team playoff for next year, one Group of 5 conference champ is guaranteed entry into the CFP. Why not do away with this conference bias entirely? Guarantee all 10 conference champs access to the CFP and let in two deserving non-conference winners or independents. I think we would rapidly see teams who want to join one of the Group of 5s as a sure way to get to the CFP. It will suck in the first years because of the inevitable blowouts, but that would change pretty quickly. Then we could just stop the crying about who gets in and who does not.

But I like it. As it stands right now, though, I like our chances as an ACC champion or potential at large. I am gradually moving to the "big fish, small pond" way of thinking, as much as I dislike the ACC.

If we are to institute this plan, I have one suggested tweak:

1) No independents; you must be a member of one of the 10 conferences to participate in CFP

I can see how in most years, this would effectively mean the top 2 from each of the SEC and the B1G, but if given awhile to work, there should be some migration even from those into other conferences, which will eventually achieve your stated goal.

I know the Power 2 would strongly oppose it, but the rest of the schools would embrace it. Wouldn't it be great to turn the tables on the two 800 pound gorillas?

The issue is that it takes a unanimous vote currently. All 10 commissioners have a vote, plus ND. No G5 commissioner is going to agree to that. ND probably wouldn't either.

It will be 16 once the four 16-team superconferences are settled.

That’s in the near future.

Whyy should B1G and SEC agree to that?

The whole point of the playoff was to increase revenue for "major conferences."

Why should the SEC and B1G agree to only getting one or two teams in the playoffs when now they will get 4 or 5?

Who do you think would want to join the Group of 5? Did you mean Power 5?

Group of 5 not the Power 5. They are the other 5 conferences considered to be the poor kids in the back of the bus. The new system lets in one of the tokens, but that is it.
