Thank goodness they didn't find some other poor animal to attack like that...

My neighbor foster's dogs and has had a small female pit bull for well over a year. They keep her in a strongly fenced-in yard along with their own big male mutt.

The pit bull is a really sweet dog and I frequently pet her through the fence - just as happy as she can be with her whole body wagging along with her tail in pure joy. However, I will never fully trust that dog as I've seen something snap in her on occasion - particularly when other animals are in the area. As of yet, I've not seen her be aggressive towards humans and believe it is largely a territorial instinct but when it happens it is much more violent than the average dog's territorial reaction. It's like some switch gets turned in that dog's brain and it becomes overly aggressive to the point it's only focus is wanting to kill.

I like all animals but some breeds of dog just shouldn't be owned by the average Joe. You see some folks getting these dangerous dog breeds (pit bulls being a favorite) and treat them as if they are no different than any other dog. They simply are different as they were intentionally bred to be different. What's worse is some of them get these dangerous dogs to fulfill some sort of weird cultural status thing. I think Germany has it right when it comes to dogs - to own certain breeds (including cross breeds) of dog you need a license of which they are draconian in their qualification requirements...
