The deal was “Make the Big Dance or your job will be terminated”

He is more than likely not going to make the NCAA tourney again this season , yet again, so I would say he’s gone.

That was the deal

Was it? You might be 100% right. That is continually said, but I don't recall anyone who actually knows what the deal was saying that. And by "that" I mean the oft-repeated "make the NCAAT and advance" mantra.

Or did Neff just say that the team had to show tangible improvement this year?

Would love to hear from someone who actually knows versus folks just repeating what the hears from others who don't really know

I think many view Neff’s comments in “The Letter”…

6

Feb 20, 2023, 8:48 PM

to mean he expects Clemson to make the NCAA tournament…

“In the days following the ACC Tournament, Coach Brownell and I met several times to discuss the state of the program, potential off-season changes and plans for next year that would return us to the NCAA Tournament.“

We’ll have to wait and see if NCAA or bust is what he meant.

If the past is prologue and one applies this letter, it’s clear to me that if Tiger Basketball fails to reach the NCAA Tournament this season, Brad Brownell will no longer be the coach.

Here is a link to the letter everyone refers to:

https://www.si.com/college/clemson/mens-basketball/graham-neff-sends-out-letter-addressing-expectations-for-clemson-tigers-basketball-brad-brownell

While it does imply the tournament next year is a goal, it does but explicitly say “tournament or you’re fired”. I would not be shocked either way right now.

Bingo! BB can’t explain away these quad 4 losses. They are simply unacceptable. I think what’s even worse is we saw the potential of this team. We saw us make a run that made us believe we were a top 25 team. Then to just completely fall apart. That’s what’ll get you fired. Neff can see BB lost the team. He may very well be a great Xs and Os guy but he’s not a great motivator and can’t seem to get guys to play hard night in and night out.

I fully expect Neff to drop the hammer. It’s almost impossible for BB to make the tournament now .

He should be fired, but that letter doesn’t imply

in any way that it’s tourney or bust.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's not accurate.

Feb 20, 2023, 8:46 PM

The closest Neff got was 'we're all disappointed' and 'it's a bottom line business.'

The real message was the 1-year tack on with no other significant adjustments plus a year end review.

Games left to play. Miracles yet to happen.

Year 13. One can dream.

I don’t believe there was a 1 yr tack on. Brownell is coaching with 3 years plus the balance of this contract year left.

That wasn’t the deal.***

Here is the letter - C&P

Feb 21, 2023, 8:27 AM

Dear Clemson family:

As we approach the beginning of "March Madness" and the most exciting part of the collegiate basketball season, I want to take a moment and share with you my views on basketball at Clemson.

First and foremost, thank you for your support all season long. There were some memorable moments in Littlejohn Coliseum, and we are grateful for all you do to create an incredible atmosphere. We should all be proud of the effort,
commitment and resilience of our student-athletes - they never wavered In the face of challenges throughout the season.

Clemson Athletics has high expectations for all twenty-one of our varsity sports programs, and we do not - and will not -shy away from our pursuit of the highest levels of excellence and championships.

This year’s Men’s Basketball season did not meet our expectations nor those of Head Coach Brad Brownell and student-athletes. There were a number of reasons for the results, but we realize this is a bottom-line game. In the days following the ACC Tournament, Coach Brownell and I met several times to discuss the state of the program, potential off-season changes and plans for next year that would return us to the NCAA Tournament.

I have an ambitious vision for Clemson Basketball - both the men’s and women’s programs - and what we can accomplish in the Atlantic Coast Conference and nationally. This is Clemson, and basketball is very important for our university and athletics department. Aggressive investment must be present to achieve such intentions. And importantly, while we are willing to push in many areas, as Clemson’s Director of Athletics, I am adamant that academic success and integrity in all of our programs are absolute non-negotiables.

I am working with our senior athletics staff to focus further investment in our basketball programs, which I believe will pay dividends next season and beyond. While we’ve continued to make strides relative to our peers in support areas, facilities and resources, we have room to do more. We must ensure we provide the necessary support staff, an exceptional student-athlete experience, strategy for evolving Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) resources and the recruiting investment to not only be competitive—but to be excellent.

Our success also would not be possible without the support of Clemson fans to pack Littlejohn on a regular basis to create an unparalleled gameday atmosphere and get behind our student-athletes, who consistently display their effort, grit and dedication to winning. Our staffs and student-athletes are already hard at work at doing what it takes to work toward a successful 2022-23 season.

Clemson is stronger when basketball is thriving. We are committed to winning basketball, and we will provide the resources needed to excel!

Go Tigers!

Graham Neff

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Yep, unfortunately the letter said "changes that WOULD

1

Feb 21, 2023, 8:53 AM

return us to the NCAA Tournament", not that MUST return us.

To my way of thinking, Monte Lee's resume at the time of HIS firing was far better than Brad Brownell's. And yet, Brownell is still here, while Monte Lee has returned to the Chicken Coop from whence he came.

Perhaps that is what we need, we need to get Wright State to put out the word that they would welcome Brad Brownell back in some capacity, maybe even as returning Head Coach. We can only hope.....
