Youngest son of Greenr goes to pee the other day (while in my shower, gross) and screams to me. I run in and see him peeing brown. This aint good. We freak out, start googling and end up calling the pediatrician which was incredible and called back immediately from a night time nurse. She assured us that it could be nothing but that we should bring samples in the next morning. That happens and they send it off for analysis, and by this time, it is back to normal.
Nurse calls back with initial analysis, no red flags, sending for full analysis, whatever that is. The lab screws that up and we have to drive him over there to give another sample. Nothing comes from that analysis. Nurse orders ultrasound.
Take son for Ultrasound yesterday. Drinks 16oz of water at 1:00, has to be there for 2:15 ultrasound, cannot go pee. We get there at 2:00 and it is touch and go, dude has to go SO BAD. Anyways, they get us back quickly, do the ultrasound, he gets to go pee, send him on his way. We were in the car by 2:22. Check in + wait time + ultrasound was 30 minutes max. Lady asks me if I wanted to get billed or go ahead and settle up today.
$655 and change. I was pretty taken back but said bill me after you send it to insurance. She assured me that was already after insurance discounted the procedure. The ultrasound is $1200.
The ultrasound was 15 minutes and the rate is $1200. That is essentially $5k per hour. She was a cute nurse, but if I were getting fucked that hard, I would rather my son not be there and I at least get to see the nurse naked.
Anyways, just another person complaining about healthcare costs. Thanks alot, Bin Laden.

It sucks. They may reduce that if you negotiate/push hard. I don't know if it is worth it to you.

$655 doesn't seem like that much when you're trying to figure out the health issues of why your son is peeing brown. I have TVs that are more expensive than that. How much is it supposed to cost?

Ultrasound and results - $1500/hr X 1/4 hr = $375.
It should cost about $375 or $200 after insurance.

Those bastadges will conveniently send you overpriced bills from any doctor that happened to be in hospital that day, then spread them out over 12-months from different groups inside and outside your network.
TigerSonJr2 got stitches on his leg. 6 different doctors swung by to see him at various points doing the exact same thing: 1) Ask how it happened, 2) Unwrap leg to look at for 30 seconds, 3) Perform no medical help or guidance, 4) Wrap it back up, then 5) send me $1,200 charge each. Only 1 doctor and nurse actually did anything to calm kid down and actually stitch up leg.
Just when you think you're done paying the bill, you're wrong.

I know someone in the insurance industry and she swears if you claim a hardship they'll reduce your bill. Never done it personally but something to keep in mind.

BCBS paid $3k+ claim to Patient First, but the EOB said they paid nothing. Good news is the EOB said I owed nothing.
They couldn't understand why I was confused.

medical insurance system that makes any since... Like most I just grit my teeth and pay whatever I'm told.
I just shake my head looking at the medical statements completely puzzled at how the business math works... For instance: A lab states the cost of running a basic blood panel is $700. That is the price they say it costs without insurance - so if you don't have insurance - that is what they will charge you.
However, in the dark recesses of a lawyers office, the lab has agreed to do that exact same $700 lab-work for only $100 as part of a "negotiated price" as an "in network provider" of some insurance company(s). The "in network" insurance company, through some mysterious process, will then only pay some portion of that $100 "negotiated" lab price and pass whatever is left of that $100 to you.
What I don't understand is if the lab-work really costs the lab $700 (paying for equipment, employees, and making a profit) then how in the world can the lab accept $100 for the exact same tests from an insurer and make the business math work??
I think the answer is that the $700 figure is a price gouge to begin with and the insurance company "negotiated price" is the more realistic figure to what it actually costs the lab to do the work and still make a profit. But who really knows - understanding a medical bill requires decrypting codes, voodoo chicken feet, and bone reading...
