Here's some portal perspective for all you "why don't we use it" folks

The top talent costs big money. Clemson has a population of around 20,000.

Austin Texas by comparison has a population over 100 times larger.

Let that sink in a bit and maybe some will start to understand why little ol Clemson can't just go on a portal picking spree.

We will never, ever, be in a position where we can outspend a group of 20 or more programs out there plus. That's a reality. Dabo and a secret sauce approach will have to serve as an equalizer under the current landscape.

C'mon. If Dabo would just wave his portal magic wand, we would be right back to stacking up CFP trophies more quickly than you could say "all in."

Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

That is why, with the advent of the portal and NL that is the beginning of Clemson’s decline as a college football superpower. Clemson cannot compete with larger schools and the massive amounts of alumni and funding they can offer. It’s sad and unfortunate but there’s no way Clemson can compete in this new environment.

Clemson has money and booster’s support to buy portal players but Dabo is not going to do it and I am ok with that. Somebody has to have some integrity and I for one thank coach Swinney for attempting to show that he still has some.

So I guess we should expect The Bearcats to smoke the Aggies in the portal. Don’t get me started on Northwestern and the 3M people who live in Chicago.

It’s about the size of your fan base not the size of your college town.

Yes, and no.

Depends on both.
Local businesses can drive dollars. Many students stay local.
It gets a bit messy when you go north to pro football towns.
Where college rules (south) - a near city matters.

While I am a big fan of micro-fundraising, most of the REAL pay for play money generated at these collectives is derived from a small handful of very wealthy boosters/alums. The type of people that can contribute millions annually for entertainment and a goal of winning a natty in a short time frame. Think people with NW's of $500M to $1B+. Sometimes, you only need one donor with mega deep pockets (cough cough cough Oregon Phil Knight).

School graduates also drive the money. Clemson 28 k - Texas 51k

Assuming a quarter graduate every year - 7 vs 13.
In 10 years - 70,000 Clemson students out in the world.
Texas would have 130,000.

Double that for 20 years, triple for 30 years, etc.

Assign a $ per graduate donating back to athletic program, it does not matter what the number is.
If $25 per year for 30 years of graduates.
Clemson per year would be $5,250,000
Texas per year would be $9,750,000

That’s just the students.
Add the community as discussed by OP and we don’t stand a chance.

It’s really amazing that we compete as well as we do (monetarily).

Georgia has 40,000 students.
Ohio state has 60,000 students
Michigan has 52,000 students
Bama has 38,000 students

Do the math.

Don’t forget about….
OSU. 600000 alumni
UGA 400000
Texas. Oil rice alumni

Clemson. 100000 alumni.

Big disparity

It’s funny how poor we are but yet Dabos a top 3 paid head coach in the country. Bottom line is DABO refuses to use the portal even though EVERY SINGLE FBS team in the country has used it to benefit their starting lineup. Don’t give me the cost BS.

It’s not BS, buddy. You actually think our alumni base has the money these other schools have? Uga has a lawyer school, a med school, the backing of big and numerous businesses in Atl, and 4x the number of alumni we have.

Shipley had a t shirt shop in Clemson as his NIL. I don’t see Keowee Ford giving out 85 F-150’s like some schools.

The portal is generally for those not happy with playing time where they are, I.e., they are not starters. They didn’t make the grade where they are.

History shows that most will still not be starters after transfer. There are exceptions. I believe that half don’t even find a destination.

The portal mentality for the “good” players is that they will go where they can get something for them, I.e., they are not team players.

Portal players have been shown already to leave just as easily as they come. They are not loyal.

Why would anyone make a concerted effort to promote this type of culture?

The portal has poison.

The reluctance to use the portal is understandable. It is about much more than money, alumni base, size of local population, etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we lose 33%-40% of our "CULTURE" guys every year.......

replace them with Freshman.........only to lose 33%-40% the next year...and on, and on, and on....it's a vicious cycle that was and is preventable, but Dabo doesn't want to............SEE ON FIELD RESULTS over the last 3-4 years. The overall and the top talent is NOWHERE close to what it was just 5-6 years ago.

Are folks under the impression we aren’t doing NIL (getting recruits money ) ? I’m struggling to understand the difference in NIL’ing a 18 year old h.s. recruit vs a proven 20 yr old transfer? Both feel dirty yet at the end of the day, there’s only one of those we’re participating in. And considering we already have numerous players quitting before the season is over, outside of picking up 3 or 4 productive guys a year in the portal, there is evidence to point to Clemson doing/having the same things going on as any other school outside of using the portal
