We had such a wonderful time yesterday! Mom did not go to a Clemson game last year at all, so I was happy she wanted to give it a shot to see my brother honored. It is a long and more difficult day having to navigate the hills and crowds of Clemson with a wheelchair, but it was all worth it to see how happy she was for him! It is also the first game since her stroke in 2014 that she has stayed the whole time. I think my old parka was the key to her staying toasty warm! Proud of her for making it all day during tailgating and the game. She got up at 6:45am, and we did not go to bed until after midnight, and she didn't have a nap either! She is truly amazing!
My brother was very humbled and honored yesterday and completely uncomfortable with the recognition he received - a true testament to his love of serving our country.
Attaching some pics in a few more posts, too!
Here is the full Bio we submitted (they understandably omitted some of it in the reading due to time): Lieutenant Colonel Bryan F. Shumway, United States Air Force (Retired), graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1996. He is a command pilot, having logged over 3,400 hours in multiple aircraft including the T-37, T-1, C-21A, C-130B, C-130E, C-130H1, & C-130H3. His flying career began as a C-21 pilot at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska where he logged more than 1,200 hours supporting our nation’s senior leaders. His C-130 experience began at Little Rock Air Force Base where he was a member of the “Fightin’ Five-Oh” 50th Airlift Squadron and deployed four times in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. This was followed by an international exchange tour in Quito, Ecuador as the only Instructor and Evaluator Pilot for Ecuador’s diverse and aging C-130 fleet. After a brief assignment in Tucson, Arizona, he was hand-picked for a one-year remote tour as the Operations Officer of a counter-drug Forward Operating Location in Manta, Ecuador, where he helped lead the drawdown and closing for the FOL after Ecuadorian leadership denied the renewal of government agreements for use of the location. From there, he returned to flying as a C-130 Instructor Pilot for the 34th Combat Training Squadron at Little Rock Air Force Base. During this time he was responsible for the planning and execution of Mobility Air Forces’ participation in ten exercises per year as part of the Joint Readiness Training Center’s multi-national, live-fire, combat mission rehearsals program. During this time he also deployed as the Deputy Commander for the 449th Air Expeditionary Group in Djibouti, Africa. In addition to being responsible for the wellbeing of over 700 Airmen, he also worked hand-in-hand with the French Air Force, US Navy, and US Special Forces directly supporting the Counter Terrorism and Counter Piracy mission. During his career he received several major awards and decorations including three Meritorious Service Medals and four Air Medals. Lieutenant Colonel Shumway currently resides in Stallings, NC with his wife, Julie, and their 3 children, Rebekah, Alex, and Emma.

Suzi, so glad you shared this special moment with us. I've followed closely your updates with your Mom since the stroke. My mother had a major stroke my freshman year in college and was a survivor in every sense of the word just like your mother. She didn't let it hold her back and continued to attack and live life the way she had in her pre-stroke days. Your great mom has some great kids.
