149 - Oakland Raiders Select Hunter Renfrow with Pick 149 of 2019 NFL Draft

If you were to poll Clemson fans about their favorite Clemson players, you will likely hear WR Hunter Renfrow’s name come up quite a few times. From 2015-2018, Renfrow went from obscure walk-on to legendary big-game Hunter.

Sports Illustrated summed it up well:

“Hunter Renfrow’s image will be burned into the memory banks for all eternity as the one who brought down the dynasty that was Alabama football.”

https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/hunter-renfrow-from-walk-on-to-hero

Before Clemson:

Of note: while his grandfather, mother, and brother each had Clemson ties, his father played for Wofford – and played against Clemson. According to ClemsonTigers.com, his “father, Tim, played at Wofford and had an interception at Clemson in 1981.”

https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/hunter-renfrow/

Prior to enrolling at Clemson, Hunter Renfrow played QB and was a standout baseball prospect at Socastee High School. According to NCAA.com:

“Renfrow's mother and brother attended Clemson and the dream of following in their footsteps was deeply sought after. With offers from Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian and Wofford, he declined the only football and baseball offers he had, which were of FCS affiliation, and walked on at Clemson. His 5-foot-10 and 155-pound frame deterred other suitors.”

https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2023-09-09/17-best-walk-ons-college-football-history#:~:text=Renfrow's%20mother%20and%20brother%20attended,and%20walked%20on%20at%20Clemson.

Being 5-foot-10 and 155 pounds sounds like equipment manager measurables – not major scholarship measurables. Turning down full scholarship offers had to be difficult. It showed the confidence Renfrow had in himself and his determination to make it.

According to Clemson.edu:

“Hunter Renfrow '18 had a choice to make about his future. A two-sport athlete in high school, he had scholarship offers from smaller regional schools to play college baseball and football. His other option was to join the Clemson Football team as a walk-on wide receiver.

Walking on at Clemson was definitely the riskier path. Renfrow would be at the bottom of the depth chart without a scholarship. Some might have opted for more certainty and guaranteed playing time.”

While at Clemson:

According to Clemson.edu:

“After redshirting his first year and becoming a top contributor on the scout team, Renfrow earned a coveted athletic scholarship and began to see playing time. Off the field, he followed his developing interest in business and chose to major in economics.

While a career in professional football wasn't necessarily his end goal, he started to believe it was possible when he began winning matchups against opposing defenders heading to the NFL.”

https://www.clemson.edu/lets-begin/begin-with-belief.html

That’s when the legend of Hunter Renfrow became truly extraordinary. Excerpts from Renfrow’s bio on ClemsonTigers.com describe him accordingly:

“Original walk-on who earned a scholarship in August 2015 and put together one of the most unlikely yet storied careers in Clemson history … finished career with 186 receptions for 2,133 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2,408 snaps over 55 games (47 starts) in his career … set Clemson records for starts by a receiver (47) and consecutive games with a reception (43) … exited Clemson ranked fifth in career receptions (186) and 11th in career receiving yards (2,133) … posted College Football Playoff records with 37 receptions and four touchdowns in seven career CFP games … also contributed as an emergency quarterback and punter as a senior.”

2018: Burlsworth Trophy winner as college football’s most outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on … Bobby Bowden Award winner as the Division I player who epitomizes dedication to faith, family, friends and football … third-team All-ACC … voted as a permanent team captain … caught 49 passes for 544 yards and a touchdown in 553 snaps over 15 games (all starts)

2017: Third-Team All-ACC selection … had 60 receptions for 602 yards and three touchdowns in 661 snaps over 14 games (13 starts) … 10th in the ACC in receptions per game (4.3) …

2016: Earned Hustle Award on offense, sharing the honor with Mitch Hyatt … had 44 catches for 495 yards and six touchdowns in 635 snaps over 11 games (nine starts) …

2015: Fifth on the team with 33 receptions for 492 yards and five touchdowns … appeared in 15 games, with 10 starts … his 14.9 yards per catch figure was third-best on the team”

https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/hunter-renfrow/

Pretty good for a walk-on QB and baseball player!

Of course, Renfrow’s stats don’t tell the full story. He burst on the scene making a growing name for himself as the 2015 season continued.

He culminated that season by scoring one touchdown against Oklahoma in the CFP Orange Bowl. He then gained Bama’s respect after hanging two touchdown receptions on the Tide in the 2015-2016 title game.

Obscurity No More!

But Renfrow was just getting started.

The next season, Renfrow demonstrated his great route running and his ability to pull in even difficult-looking receptions. Clemson and Bama again culminated the season by meeting for the national championship. Making yet another incorrect football assertion, Finebaum swore Renfrow would “not get free tonight.”

And yet, in the Third Quarter:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5D189cGqf0

But, as we all know, Clemson again trailed by 3 with six seconds remaining in the game. Clemson turned back to Renfrow once more.

One Moment in Time:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IVRNumSofg

Legendary status forever cemented!

Now the bane of Alabama Nations’ existence, he continued making exceptional plays. Neither Clemson nor Gamechicken fans will soon forget this exceptional play in the 2017 bottle-throwing contest in Columbia:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Oq-YemAMRU

So MANY other great moments! Here is a Hunter Renfrow highlight video just for fun!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=r1lDsKy0sUE

After Clemson:

The Oakland Raiders selected Hunter Renfrow with Pick 149 of 2019 NFL Draft. He has played the previous five seasons for the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. He is currently a free agent!

From walk-on to Legend!

North Carolina Highway 149, known as Ken Trowbridge Road, is a 1.2 mile two-lane state highway that runs from the south end at US 64 in Plymouth to the north end at Plymouth Pulp Mill in the northeast area of North Carolina known as the Inner Banks.

Going around Columbia, we check out South Carolina State, a public, historically black, land-grant university in Orangeburg, SC. It began in 1872 as South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Institute. In 1896, it became Colored Normal Industrial Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina until 1954 when it became South Carolina State College, then South Carolina State University in 1992. SC State has about 2,900 students on a 160 acre main campus in 6 colleges including agriculture, business, education, and science and is the only university in the state with a degree program in nuclear engineering. The athletic teams, the Bulldogs, compete in NCAA Division I in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Notable alumni include TV host Armstrong Williams, Congressman Jim Clyburn, US District Court Judge Matthew Perry, coach Willie Jeffries, and NFL Hall of Famers Harry Carson, Deacon Jones, Marion Motley, and Donnie Shell.
