Tigers go 9-4 under coach Bowden and beat the coots 23-21.
The Tiger "savior" Willie Korn arrives.
Cullen Harper threw five touchdown passes, setting a new school record for most touchdown passes thrown in a single game.
The first Clemson team in history to have a 3,000-yard passer, 1,000-yard rusher, and 1,000 receiver (Harper, Davis, and Kelly.
In Clemson the year's high was 103 and the low was 16.

2007: Apple Corporation introduces a new electronic device they call an “iPhone”. The bridge over the the Mississippi river on I35W collapses with cars dropping the 50ft into the river, 13 people lost their lives in the tragedy. A student on Virginia Tech Campus goes on a killing spree, leaving over 30 students dead. The worlds most efficient electric car, the Tesla Roadster, is shown at car shows prior to full production 2008.
The world's largest passenger cruise ship, the "Liberty of the Seas", goes into service. Al-Qaeda terrorists explode massive bombs in Algiers, including one at the United Nations building, killing 50. Nancy Pelosi is elected as the first female Speaker of the House in the US Congress. The Mitchell Report is published, which shows the use of anabolic steroids and human growth hormones is widespread in Major League Baseball. Robert A. Hawkins enters the Von Maur department store and murders 8 people using a semi-automatic rifle in the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska.
ACC Champions of 2007 were the No. 9 (7-1, 11-3) Virginia Tech Hokies. They avenged an earlier loss to Atlantic Division winning No. 12 Boston College by taking the ACC Championship Game, 30-16 in Jacksonville, Florida. But, when they went back to Florida, to the Orange Bowl in Miami, they were beaten by the No. 8 Kansas (Yes, KANSAS) Jayhawks of Coach Mark Mangino, by a score of 24-21. By 2007, the SEC was beginning to widen the gap between themselves and other conferences. Evidence of this is seen by the result of Game 2 of Virginia Tech's season, as the eventual ACC Champs were run out of Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge by LSU, 48-7.
Tempering that defeat somewhat, LSU later became the only BCS era National Champions with two losses, in 2007. Both losses were 3 OT affairs, against SEC foes Kentucky (43-37) and Arkansas (50-48). The fact that every “contending” team in 2007 had at least two losses shows how competitive college football was becoming. (Kansas was the highest ranked team with only one loss.) LSU, under Coach Les Miles, took down No. 14 Tennessee 21-14 to win the SEC, and then took out previously No. 1 ranked Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl BCS Championship game, 38-24, to win the title.
At Clemson, incoming freshman QB Willy Korn was named one of the Top 10 incoming impact players in the country in a preseason poll. But, for now, he would wait his turn, as Cullen Harper was named as the starter, having already “waited his turn”. There were still rumblings of discontent at the start of the 2007 season over the previous season's late collapse. But, as seemed to be the pattern with Tommy Bowden coached teams, when the rumblings of discontent were at their highest, the team suddenly would begin to perform better. This pattern was repeated at the start of the 2007 season.
And, what better way to quash discontent than by beating a No. 19 Florida State team in Death Valley to start the season? Clemson did just that, winning 24-18 on a Monday night, nationally televised ESPN game. The luster would be dimmed on that win as the season went along, however, as FSU would finish 7-6 for the 2nd year in a row, AND have several wins later vacated due to NCAA infractions. But, for Clemson, it was a great start to the year. That win got us into the rankings at No. 25, and against Louisiana-Monroe the next week, Cullen Harper set an all time Clemson record by tossing five touchdown passes, as the Tigers cruised to a 49-26 win.
Clemson was up to No. 20, and took it easy on the in-state Furman Paladins, winning 38-10. When the now No. 15 Tigers dismantled NC State 42-20 on the road, Clemson fans finally began to hope that the Good Times were here again. But, it seemed, another aspect of Tommy Bowden coached teams was, just when you thought that, something unexpectedly bad was bound to happen. And it did, as the now No. 13 Tigers were inexplicably beaten 13-3 in Bobby Dodd by a mediocre at best GT team. Where did the offense suddenly go?
The sudden downturn continued as we welcomed No. 15 Virginia Tech to Death Valley, and the No. 22 Tigers went down to a 41-23 defeat at the hands of Beamerball. But then, on my birthday, Oct. 20, the offensive switch suddenly flipped on again, and we CRUSHED an eventual bowl team in Central Michigan by a video game score of 70-14. Happy Birthday to me!
The good vibes continued at Maryland the next week, as we handled the turtles 30-17. Still on the road, and now back in the rankings at No. 25, we roasted Duke 47-10 at Wallace Wade. Then, back home in the Valley, for once we didn't have a problem with Wake Forest, as we were now ranked No. 20, and won easily, 44-10. We were climbing the rankings again at No. 15 when we welcomed No. 18 Boston College to Death Valley. This one would be for the Atlantic Division title, and a spot in the ACC Championship Game for the winner.
Clemson got a James Davis TD and held Matty Ice in check in the 1st half, to lead 7-3 at halftime. With the game later tied at 10-10, Cullen Harper was intercepted by BC. They would later get a field goal to lead 13-10, but Harper would come back for Clemson as he crash landed in the end zone on a QB run to give the Tigers the lead, 17-13 with 5:28 to go. But, Matt Ryan found his receiver wide open in the end zone on an ensuing drive for a long touchdown, giving BC the lead 20-17. Taking over with just over a minute to go, Clemson had a shot to win it, but a beautiful long ball by Harper was dropped by Aaron Kelly on the two yard line on 2nd down. When BC sacked the Clemson QB on 3rd down, we needed an unlikely 54 yard field goal to send the game to OT. Mark Buchholz came up just short, and BC had won the game, and the Atlantic Division crown, 20-17.
I give this Clemson Tiger team all the credit in the world for overcoming this massive disappointment, and winning the rivalry game in a nationally televised ESPN2 night game against South Carolina the following week. Clemson broke out a seldom used, white jersey, purple pants uniform combo for this game. South Carolina parlayed a long Kenny McKinley run after a short pass into a touchdown, to take the lead in the game 21-20, with exactly 9:00 to go in the game. The Usuk offense had moved the ball all night, but the Clemson defense had forced several turnovers, and blocked a punt, so that South Carolina was still behind until this point in the game.
The game announcers were saying, “Here we go again, Clemson is Clemsoning this game away.” They even referenced the previous week's loss to BC as an upset, which was strange, as BC had the higher ranking at the time. Thunder and Lightning had already rushed for over 200 yards in this game, would it all be for naught? We had to punt the ball away to South Carolina with 5 minutes to go, and the defense would have to come up with a stop. UsuK reeled off a quick first down, but we finally held, and forced a punt, taking over on our own 23 with 2:09 to go. Aaron Kelly had lived for a week with the huge disappointment of dropping what would have been the winning TD pass vs BC.
He would come up HUGE on this last drive, catching several crucial passes, including one on 3rd and 18 from the Clemson 40, and then on 4th and 5 from the South Carolina 46, to keep the drive alive. He caught his 3rd pass in a row on the Gamecock 16. This year, there would be no late sack to save South Carolina. But, Buchholz had already missed one wide left, and another wide right in this game. So, the field goal was NOT automatic. Clemson wasted two downs spiking the ball, and then moving it to the center of the field, then calling our final timeout to bring on Buchholz with 3 seconds to go. Coach Spurrier had called timeout the previous year to “ice” the Clemson kicker, and everyone expected him to do it again. So, he didn't, and Buchholz struck the ball straight and true, with a slight draw at the end, sending the fans home crying Coot tears from the Roach. Clemson leads the series 64-37-4.
The win moved us back up to No. 15, and we accepted an invite to play No. 22 Auburn in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Auburn was still coached by Tommy Tuberville. The game was tied 17-17 for most of the 4th quarter, as the teams traded one defensive stop after another. Both teams had missed earlier long field goal attempts in the game. The game predictably went to Overtime. Clemson had the first possession, but the defense of Auburn DC Will Muschamp held us to a field goal attempt. Buchholz tucked it just inside the uprights, to give us a 20-17 lead.
The Clemson defense forced Auburn into a 3rd and 13, but Auburn completed a pass that was inches short of the first down. Then, Tommy Tuberville rolled the dice, and the 4th down QB sneak gained enough yardage to keep their hopes alive, barely. Then, on an ensuing 3rd and 3 play, their back broke loose up the middle to score the winning touchdown, 23-20. Just one more oh-so-close loss under Tommy Bowden. All these close losses meant he had used up most of his goodwill with Clemson fans. 2008 would be a critical season for him, if he wished to remain as Clemson Head Coach, regardless of his buyout.
