163 - Derrick Hamilton Secured 163 Receptions for Clemson

WR Derrick Hamilton (2001-2003) was an amazing playmaker at Clemson. GoUpstate.com described Hamilton Accordingly:

“He's the bait and the playmaker, feared at several positions with and without the ball. He can change the course of a game in an instant with his instinctive moves.

Coach Tommy Bowden calls him "Noodle" because of his straight-up elusive running style, a nickname that Derrick Hamilton dislikes.

Bowden also calls Hamilton "the best all-around athlete I've coached at Clemson, he's got all the records."

https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2003/11/12/put-it-in-hamiltons-hands/29691431007/

ClemsonTigers.com described Hamilton’s Clemson career as follows:

He finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in receptions, kickoff return yards, and all-purpose running. He had 167 catches, breaking Rod Gardner’s record by one. He joined Gardner as the only players in Clemson history to gain over 1000 yards receiving on one season. His 10 reception touchdowns established a Clemson single season record. He averaged 34.5 yards per kickoff return this year, including a 100-yard return against North Carolina.

https://clemsontigers.com/hamilton-washington-to-turn-professional/

According to Sports-Reference.com, Hamilton registered the following stats by season during his Clemson career:

2001:
- 49 Receptions for 590 Yards (12.0 Average)
- 3 Receiving Touchdowns
- 4 Carries for 21 Yards (5.3 Average)
- 2 Punt Returns for 11 Yards (5.5 Average)
- 15 Kick Returns for 476 Yards (31.7 Average)
- 1 Kick Return Touchdown

2002:
- 52 Receptions for 602 Yards (11.6 Average)
- 2 Receiving Touchdowns
- 21 Carries for 208 Yards (9.9 Average)
- 2 Rushing Touchdowns
- 35 Punt Returns for 377 Yards (10.8 Average)
- 32 Kick Returns for 696 Yards (21.8 Average)

2003:
- 62 Receptions for 1026 Yards (16.5 Average)
- 10 Receiving Touchdowns
- 17 Carries for 111 Yards (6.5 Average)
- 29 Punt Returns for 218 Yards (7.5 Average)
- 11 Kick Returns for 380 Yards (34.5 Average)
- 1 Kick Return Touchdown

Total (2001-2003):
- 163 Receptions for 2,218 Yards (13.6 Average)
- 15 Receiving Touchdowns
- 42 Carries for 340 Yards (8.1 Average)
- 2 Rushing Touchdowns
- 66 Punt Returns for 606 Yards (9.2 Average)
- 58 Kick Returns for 1552 Yards (26.8 Average)
- 2 Kick Return Touchdowns

Of note, Hamilton had multiple great games for Clemson. ClemsonTigers.com described arguably one his best games from 2002 when Hamilton was named the ACC Offensive Back of the Week:

Clemson’s Derrick Hamilton (Dillon, S.C.) gained 256 all-purpose yards in leading Clemson to a 24-19 victory over Georgia Tech. The 6-4, 190-pound sophomore’s performance included 97 yards rushing, 96 yards in punt returns, 41 yards in kickoff returns and 22 yards in receptions.

163 - Kyle Parker Rushed for 163 Yards for Clemson

22

It seems impressive to be a star athlete in one sport. Kyle Parker (2008-2010) was a standout athlete in two sports. SaturdayRoad.com described Kyle Parker’s two-sport accolades at Clemson as follows:

“Parker (2008-10) is the only student-athlete in NCAA history to hit 20 home runs in baseball and throw 20 touchdowns in football in the same academic year. He was an All-ACC selection on the diamond in 2008 and 2009 and then a First Team Ping/Baseball All-American in 2010. To this day, he remains inside the program’s top 10 all-time for home runs (46).

On the gridiron, Parker led Clemson to 9 wins and its first Atlantic Division crown as a redshirt freshman in 2009. He threw for 2,526 yards and 20 touchdowns that season and ended his Clemson career with 32 passing touchdowns.”

https://saturdayroad.com/clemson-tigers/clemson-announces-2023-hall-of-fame-class-headlined-by-kyle-parker-raymond-priester/

Parker enrolled at Clemson in Spring 2008. Doing so allowed him to play baseball for Clemson in 2008 as he went through Spring Practice for football.

Parker redshirted the 2008 football season. He then played baseball for Clemson in Spring 2009.

In Fall 2009, Parker claimed the starting QB job for Clemson football. He then played his third season of collegiate baseball in Spring 2010. After the 2010 season, he was then eligible for the MLB Draft; thereby, leading Parker to face a difficult decision.

Parker had achieved some impressive collegiate baseball numbers. According to Baseball-Almanac the right fielder recorded the following baseball sats:

2008:
.303 Average, 14 Home Runs, 50 RBI

2009:
.255 Average, 12 Home Runs, 52 RBI

2010:
.344 Average, 20 Home Runs, 64 RBI

Clemson Career (2008-2010):
.302 Average, 46 Home Runs, 166 RBI

Those numbers were good enough for the Colorado Rockies to draft Parker in the First Round of the 2010 MLB Draft – this leading to Parker’s tough decision. According to RoxPile.com:

“The Rockies took a risk when they selected Parker in the first round of the 2010 Draft. Despite just finishing his junior season in baseball, Kyle had three years of football eligibility remaining and spoke openly about his desire to return to Clemson for another year. Initially, the Rox offered Parker $2.2M, but asked him to give up his football career — something Kyle wasn’t willing to do.”

https://roxpile.com/2011/01/29/kyle-parker-rockies-prospect-spotlight/

Parker now had to decide between accepting the Rockies’ $2.2 million offer and immediately beginning a professional baseball career versus returning to Clemson for another football season(s).

He chose Clemson.

In his two seasons quarterbacking Clemson, Parker put up the following numbers according to Sports-Reference.com:

2009:
205 Completions for 2526 Yards (6.8 Average)
20 Passing Touchdowns
61 Carries for 135 Yards (2.2 Average)
1 Rushing Touchdown

2010:
196 Completions for 2213 Yards (6.5 Average)
12 Passing Touchdowns
47 Carries for 28 Yards (0.6 Average)

Clemson Career (2008-2010):
401 Completions for 4739 Yards (6.7 Average)
32 Passing Touchdowns
108 Carries for 163 Yards (1.5 Average)
1 Rushing Touchdown

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/kyle-parker-1.html

After careful consideration, Parker decided to take the Rockies’ offer, but still return to Clemson to play football. Because he chose to play another football season for Clemson, however, the signing bonus was now lowered. According to the Roxpile.com article cited above:

“In August, Parker and the Rockies finally came to an agreement. He signed for $1.4M with permission to return to Clemson for a final season.”

https://roxpile.com/2011/01/29/kyle-parker-rockies-prospect-spotlight/

Seeing that $2.2 million dollar signing bonus being reduced to a $1.3 million signing bonus could not have made for an easy decision. Choosing to play one more season for Clemson cost Parker $900,000. But, ultimately, isn’t Clemson worth it? As ClemsonTigers.com put it:

“Someone once said there is something in those hills at Clemson. At the end of the day, whatever is in those hills was too much for Kyle Parker to turn down.”

https://clemsontigers.com/parker-will-return-to-clemson-football-program/

Parker eventually spent two seasons with the Rockies.

After his playing career, Parker returned to God’s Country. According to Wikipedia:

Following his playing career, in July 2017, Parker returned to Clemson to finish his degree, and joined the football team as an assistant coach. Parker shared a house with former Rockies teammate Ben Paulsen while finishing his degree.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Parker

Parker’s family also deserves recognition for giving back to the greater community. The Augusta Chronicle provided the following information about Kyle’s Mom, Cathy Parker:

“Cathy Parker understands how blessed their family has been in sports. She believes those blessings should be shared with those less fortunate.

"We teach our children that when God blesses you, it's not just for you, it's for others," she said. "You need to see how you can repay that."

She put that lesson to concrete use after seeing an ESPN documentary on a high school football team in Barrow, Alaska, the nation's northernmost city where the dropout and suicide rates were disproportionately high. Parker fixated on the fact that the football team was playing on a gravel field.

With her kids' school installing a plush artificial turf field in Florida, Parker set about trying to get the same for kids she didn't know in a town 4,000 miles away.

Project Alaska Turf began in February 2007 and raised $850,000. The new blue field was installed by August, in time for the 2007 season.

Parker established Athletes to Champions, a nonprofit organization which aspires to equip, inspire and develop character in kids through athletics. The past two years, the Parkers have started and helped run summer sports camps in North Carolina and Pop Warner leagues in Florida.

Most recently they provided the football equipment for 110 kids on three teams to help bolster a revitalized park in Jacksonville that had been overrun by drugs instead of families.

"That's 110 kids whose lives are going to be changed because they are involved in athletics," she said.”

Kudos to the entire Parker family!!!

If I remember correctly, that dirty hit was against Auburn. Parker did not seem the same afterward.

Even though he stayed in the Auburn game, he wasn't 100%. Clemson had a wide-open receiver in the end zone during overtime in that Auburn game and Parker overthrew him. With a good throw, Clemson wins that game (the game would have ended on that play) and Auburn might never have won the 2010 national title.

Parker did not look 100% the rest of the season.

North Carolina Highway 163 is a 9.1 mile two-lane mountain highway starting on the west end at US221/NC194 in West Jefferson and travels southeast to NC 16 near Glendale Springs. The Glendale Springs Inn and Restaurant is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The venue for the Clemson vs Presbyterian baseball game last night, Fluor Field, is a 6,700 seat baseball stadium in Greenville, SC that opened on April 6, 2006 as West End Field. It became Fluor Field in 2008, named for the Fluor Corporation. It is the home of the Greenville Drive, a class A minor league team for the Boston Red Sox and is a close replica of Fenway Park with the 30 foot high "Green Monster" wall in left field. The Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum is adjacent to Fluor Field. The Greenville Drive start their 2024 season in Greensboro on April 5 with a 3 game series and open their home schedule on April 9 with a 6 game series vs the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
