Historic Johnstone Hall Relic Salvage

Certainly most here know that Johnstone A Section, New A, and the Loggia are slated for demolition, my contact in Housing says it happens sometime this winter.

The old cabinets in there could be easily salvaged. The question is, who has need for them, and they are pretty bulky. However, the bottom plate of the rifle rack, with cutouts for two rifle butts, is not very large, easily removed, and may have sentimental value for those who were in Johnstone in the era when rifles were still in the Dorm rooms.

Removing them and selling them for a fund-raiser could be accomplished--if anyone cares. There are hundreds of them still there, but that day is drawing to a close.

A sharp entrepreneur might make something out of that. Otherwise, it is just more of the Clemson Past and Tradition being cast upon the demolition debris.

I figured they could just squash the whole thing down and set it next to the curb for the recycle truck.

The Alumni Association did that during the first demo

I have the door plate (C-620 let’s go!) and rifle rest from my freshman room.

I don’t think they sold very many because I got a second solicitation asking if I was interested in any other rooms.

The original paint on those cabinets is lead based so they have to be sealed or carefully stripped.

The comment about the roaches is spot on. No telling what they have hoarded below in the catacombs. Perhaps someone can chime in about roach sizes from the annual competition to capture the largest roach in Johnstone.

If the University had a real commitment to sustainable energy, they could harness the power of the roaches streaming through the Johnstone tunnels using some electric generation tech--like a hydro plant drives turbines with water. Power output would be increased by billeting all the imminent flunk-outs in A Section, whereupon the roaches would be able to eat better from all the party debris.

We got in those tunnels, they are not large like the main campus power/steam/telecom/water and sewer tunnels, but they are there. We popped up one hatch and found ourselves looking at the Pershing Rifles Company C4 storeroom festooned with trophies---on C4 Johnstone. We knew those guys, so the hatch went back down, and we scurried on.

For a total of 2 years from 1982-84. Those gun racks were interesting with the curtain in front of them to be used as a makeshift “closet” 😳
