Russian state media thrilled with McConnell and GOP de-funding Ukraine.

Supporting Ukraine financially has been one of the smartest safest effective military initiatives ever deployed by America.

I assume the de-funding is theatrics by GOP and they will soon agree to funding Ukraine.

We just need some GOP legislators with a few, not too many, brain cells.

This idea that we must fund Ukraine to re-establish their borders from a foreign invasion while ignoring our very own foreign invasion along the US Southern Border is political theater at it's best. And I'm being kind by allowing Democrats the "political theater" description...

I've been very clear in my support of funding Ukraine - even willing to sacrifice 10% of our annual military budget to do it:

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-forum/message/welp...-for-what-we-got-out-of-the-20-years,-$8-trillion-and-thousands-of-34037185#34037185

But Ukraine support must be secondary to our own border security. To subscribe to this Democratic talking point that it is somehow "criminal" or "supporting Putin" to fund our own Southern border security FIRST gives credence to why so many have a valid argument that the Democratic Party always puts America last.

So NO... funding Ukraine should and MUST be linked to funding and putting real teeth in our own Southern border security. If you are too simple-minded or intellectually dishonest to understand why that must be the case then perhaps you need to study what is actually going on at our Southern border from sources other than MSNBC...

The "loopholes" were created by Biden

"The proposal is a part of the package of reforms the Biden administration announced on January 5, 2023 to prepare for the end of its use of Title 42. The Biden administration’s new regulation creates a “rebuttable presumption of asylum ineligibility” for aliens who either fail to enroll in one of the Biden administration’s new parole programs or use the CBP One app to schedule their arrival in the United States after traveling through a country (other than their country of origin) en route to the United States in which they could have applied for asylum.

This type of deterrence policy was originally implemented by the Trump administration in 2019, but ultimately vacated by a federal court. The Trump rule, referred to as the “third-country transit rule”, barred aliens from asylum eligibility if they transited through a third-country (a country other than their home country and the United States) without first seeking protection there.1

There are two important differences between the Trump-era regulation and the Biden administration’s new proposed rule I want to highlight. First, the Trump-era regulation barred aliens from receiving asylum if they did not fall under an exception to the rule (see end note 1). The Biden proposal, on the other hand, imposes a “rebuttable presumption” against eligibility. This means that aliens who make a credible fear claim could present evidence to overcome this presumption, thus giving asylum officers more issues to analyze in already long credible fear interviews.

Second, unlike the Trump-era third-country transit rule, the Biden administration’s proposed rule does not require aliens to submit an application for protection in a country they have transited through en route to the United States. The Biden administration will allow an alien to circumvent the presumption against eligibility so long as they merely “pursue a lawful pathway”, i.e., schedule their unlawful arrival using DHS's new CBP One app and enter via an issuance of parole. The rule, however, allows an alien to circumvent this requirement (and the rule’s presumption against eligibility for asylum) if the alien can show that they faced a language or technical barrier that posed a “serious obstacle” in operating the mobile phone app.

The proposal also includes several wide exceptions that threaten to swallow the whole rule. First, an alien can circumvent this rule if they can demonstrate to an asylum officer or immigration judge that they (or an accompanying family member) faced an acute medical emergency; faced an imminent or extreme threat to life or safety (such as a threat of rape, kidnapping, torture, or murder); or fall under the definition of a “victim of a severe form of trafficking in persons”.

Second, and this is important: The regulation includes a carve-out for family units who are able to establish eligibility for withholding of removal under section 241(b)(3) (covering persecution claims) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) or 8 C.F.R. § 1208.16(c)(2) (covering torture claims). This exception may arguably be large enough to defeat the rule’s entire deterrence purpose as it applies to adults who bring children to the United States illegally in order to increase their chance of release into the United States. If the Biden administration sincerely wants to deter the smuggling of children into the United States, this is not the way to do it."

i.e. stop blaming the law, blame the law's enforcement.

Physical security of the border is required, serious lawful repercussions for those American organizations encouraging and abetting the illegal immigration in Mexico and throughout South America, as well as bare knuckles a "come to the light" diplomacy with Mexico as well.

PS part 2.... Not all invasions involve armies, tanks and bombs. Massive illegal and uncontrolled immigration is just that - a foreign invasion by infiltration.

The border is a problem, no doubt, but there shouldn't be a false dichotomy here that the two have to be linked and that we can't do one without the other (or that we can't do both separately). These two problems shouldn't be linked.

We also can't compare the two problems.

As for the "supporting Putin" argument, I'm sorry, but there is a segment of the GOP (the MAGA wing) that does support him. Certainly not all or even most Pubs, but they exist.

We have a segment of America that wants Ukraine to fall to Russia and is too stupid to understand the consequences of that.

do something about our Southern border?? What has worked thus far to get them to address the Southern border disaster?

Heck - their border czar - Alejandro Mayorkas - even refuses to acknowledge there is a problem with his idiotic "the border is secure" garbage. So how do you coerce a Political Party that has shown no inclination to actually secure our Southern border for many years now? How do you get them to take action on an issue that is literally overwhelming State/local governments, introducing huge quantities of unknown elements into the USA, encouraging human trafficking, and resulting in numerous crimes against US citizens including murder?

So no - it is very appropriate, at this time, to link giving Ukraine $100 billion dollars for their nation's security efforts to our very own border security.

I don't think I can nor do I necessarily think they want to fix it. At least, not a real fix. I think they're playing a very long game with politics and elections here.

As I mentioned, it's a problem. It's not a comparable one to Ukraine, and both these problems should--and can--be addressed separately.

Lots of Dem governors and mayors are asking for the federal government to act to stem the flow of illegal immigrants, including this week, Katie Hobbs the Democratic governor of AZ. This is proof that we have a serious problem that needs to be addressed.

It is mindless to continue to accept the status quo. The border is not secure regardless of the robotic protestations to the contrary from Mayorkas.

Using Ukraine as leverage appears to be the only way to force legislation that will begin to secure our border.

Furthermore the US taxpayers deserve to know that our dollars are not being siphoned off in a country known for corruption -Ukraine.

We deserve to know what the end goal is and Europe needs to assume more financial responsibility for a problem in their backyard.
