It did not stop them from paying 1.3 billion a year for the new CFP tv broadcast rights.

ESPN is going to be streaming those new CFP games on a paid subscription. They were not about to announce that in advance, but it will happen. No way they could have paid that amount based on cable . The playoffs and championship games such as the CFP, Superbowl, NCAABT, THE WORLD SERIES, ETC WILL ALL BE LIVE STREAMED ON A PAID SUBSCRIPTION . Count on it. That is where the money will come from. Cable TV is dying.

To be sure, promised amounts and "paid" amounts are not the same.

From what I've read, ESPN has the habit of writing options into their contracts that allow for renegotiation if ESPN so chooses.

With the financial troubles at Disney and ESPN, I would not be surprised if there is a change in the SEC media rights before too long.

However, the need for Clemson and FSU is not so much to enjoy increased revenue as it is to remain on a level playing field - so if we can join the SEC, we'll be financially competitive with the SEC no matter what happens between them and ESPN. Then the only worry would be how would the SEC deal stack up against the B1G media rights. The same would be true in reverse if we joined the B1G.
