I asked this question 2 years ago and got blasted, so...

Oct 22, 2023, 9:10 AM

I'll ask again. Is the money Dabo getting making him complacent? I said I felt like the big house, the attention, the money, the high-end country club in Florida, etc etc has taken his drive away.

To me, it's really showing. He seems to be reading and believing his own press clippings and the rants are getting stranger. For example, this past week, he basically said that maybe we should lose some games just to get rid of some bandwagon fans.

Who wants to lose fans? Regardless of how we got them? I mean really, what coach would say they only want to lose fans???

Thoughts?

PS I'm ok if you think I'm off base but it just seems like he has changed.

Appears to me he has been made bigger than the program. We

the fans have had a hand in that. Everything seems to be about Dabo more than it is Clemson. That’s an issue!

He got away with taking less talented players and put the with talented players and won that way.... only because the talented players covered up the less talented. But in Dabo's mind that was having any one player be just as talented and good as a highly talented player. Now he is doing the same thing in coaching with his staff. It may work out years from now the more experience they get.....but in the meantime its going to be a long hurt.

It would work down the road if they had other coaches with years of experience that they could learn from, but they don't have that and it ends up with them trying to fix things every single week, and nothing ever gets fixed before they jump to fixing something else!!!

I don’t know. Culture has promoted this nonsense we call salaries. Our staff has everything +. Think coaching at this level has become 24/7. Got to be difficult. I know thos - he has used his wealth to help tons of people and organizations.

We also were gas lighted by redefining what Best meant in Best is the standard. The Best is yet to come and the fun is in the winning clearly defined what the word best meant in our motto Best is the Standard. Yet last week anyone who didn’t understand it meant doing the best you can was a band wagon fan and needed culling.

This behavior is cultish and is a direct result of one man having too much power at a school. When one has too much power they lose accountability and it’s clear that Dabo doesn’t feel accountable to the school, the fan base or anyone. This mush change

Good post. Unfortunately, "Best is the Standard" is apparently receding into the past.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not true. Best is still the standard, just like an A in a class is the standard

If you don’t make the A, that doesn’t mean it’s no longer the standard.

on the roster, and it is sapping his motivation and drive.

Just kidding. I don’t know what’s going on, but we are certainly in a funk. To your point, I have often wondered what makes coaches who have achieved great success (and piles of money) keep grinding while us normal workaday guys look forward to the day we can retire. Same thing for other ridiculous earners - athletes, actors, musicians - what does motivate them to keep going? If money is the goal, how much is enough? If money is not the goal, what is?

I honestly don’t think that money is the driver for Dabo. I’m not sure if he would say the goal is graduating solid young men, winning championships, or (likely) some combination of the two.

I am fairly convinced that when Dabo believes that either of those two goals is no longer achievable, he will step aside, and firmly believe that Clemson head coach will be his last job.

I don't think it's the money. The level of success and belief in his program is his biggest problem. Dabo, at least publicly, sees what could be rather than what is. I had a former boss that fell into this trap. They see the glimpses of greatness and it affects their judgement. They believe they can get that out of people on a regular basis and that level of greatness would then become the norm. He also has a personal experience of being given an opportunity. As a result, he thinks everybody is one opportunity away from greatness. It's admirable but it isn't nearly as common as he believes it is based on his own personal experience.

I applaud him for his willingness to grant those opportunities but he struggles with moving on from that opportunity when it doesn't work out. I get the impression he has made some hard decisions about this team and staff already but he is going to have to defy his personal convictions to correct them and that is EXTREMELY difficult for someone who has achieved the level of success Dabo has. I do not envy his next few months. Some people say he has too much pride. I don't think it's pride. He has convictions and sticks to them. It's probably semantics. In either case, he's in a results oriented business. He's got to get better results in the W/L column b/c that is how he will be judged in the profession, regardless of how he wants to be judged. It's a tough spot to be in when a few guys, Day, Saban, Smart, that have or are having historically successful runs at their programs. That's the standard Dabo invited for comparison.

What you're saying is just offering more excuses for his fumbling the coaching hires without ever doing a legit coaching search. His just pulled people away from their office jobs and called them a coach. Anybody who can't see that's what he done, they are wanting to look in another direction other than what he actually done. And he done it without caring what anybody thought it bc in his mind he is the BOSS, and what he does as the boss is final!!!

I think you pretty much nailed it. I don't think it is anything, obviously, that he thinks he is doing. In his mind he is doing everything that he did in the past when we have had great teams. That is the trap. And quite frankly, on the surface, nothing probably has changed ....... much. But when you are at the top of your profession, regardless of what it is, just the slightest changes can make a difference. Many have blamed it on his coaching hires, and that could be it, as there have certainly been a bunch of new faces, so maybe that is where he needs to look first. I don't know, as I like all of them. But me liking them does not make them good coaches. Dabo has to do a lot of soul searching for the rest of the season to get this program turned around. I think the players are there, but they sure are off track at present!

Very insightful post. Never thought about it this way, but it makes perfect sense. The guy obviously loves a challenge and making Hunter Renfrows is tough. And as you point out, usually doesn't work.

It’s definitely possible. We see this happen all the time, especially with athletes.

Take Conor McGregor as an example. He was legitimately one of the best UFC fighters until he made $100 million boxing Floyd. Now he’s unbelievably rich. But he can’t compete against top fighters now. The drive just isn’t there anymore. Can’t blame him though. Why train 12 hours a day when you have a yacht?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know.

5

Oct 22, 2023, 9:40 AM

I think if it's anything like that, it's more likely that Dabo overestimated what he had built and his own coaching abilities. Maybe he thought he had a machine that was just going to keep chugging along no matter what changed in and around it. Maybe he thought he could bring in coaches with no experience that fit his culture and then personally teach them how to coach.

I think that's more likely than Dabo getting fat and lazy.

Totally agree. IMO, Dabo is a long way from fat, happy, lazy or complacent. To your point, I think he drastically overestimated what got Clemson to the top could keep them on top, and the degree to which his belief was enough to maintain a level of excellence that translated to elite play and consistent winning vs top teams. College football changed really quickly and he has not changed quickly enough.

There’s definitely hubris at play. The staff is the issue. Our coaches are GA’s promoted from within. This creates group think while these guys learn on the job.

Case in point: GA Cole Stoudt promoted to offensive development coach. Thomas Austin with one year experience at Ga St given o line coach. Mickey Conn pulled from Grayson to solidify Gallman and two other Grayson players. Conn promoted to co defensive coordinator and safeties coach. Nick Eason with limited coaching experience promoted to D Line coach. GA/analyst Goodwin promoted to co defensive coordinator and LB coach. CJ Spiller with zero experience promoted to RB coach. Tyler Grisham promoted from GA to receiver coach.

When we had success, Dabo was hiring the best position coaches, coordinators, and GA’s. The decline started after the 44-16 Bama beat down. Lawrence should have two natty’s.

I think the team has as much talent as the 2018 team. They haven’t been developed or placed in the best position to win.

The only thing I disagree with in the post above is that this team is as talented as 2018.

It’s not even close and idc what recruiting rankings say. I follow it as closely as anyone and maybe they were highly touted recruits but they haven’t been coached and developed.

Part of that is they aren’t being given the time to be developed bc they’re having to play right away and some freshman are ready for that but not all. It used to be we could redshirt and take our time and produce guys like Kevin Dodd and TJ Green who weren’t heavily relied upon early in their careers so they were given time to be brought along at their pace.

Now we don’t have that option as much bc we lose 8-10 players every off-season to the portal and just replace them with freshman whether the freshman are ready to play or not they don’t have a choice bc we have to fill the depth chart.

I know a lot in here think not using the portal isn’t a big deal but every year we don’t use it for real we fall a little further behind. When you replace 10 guys with true freshman you’re going to constantly be young and when we get matched up with a WF or Duke that doesn’t recruit near our level but they have coached and developed their guys and they are Juniors/Seniors playing against our talented but young true freshman… more times than not the experience is going to make that game defining play bc they’ve been there and done that meanwhile our freshman are literally learning on the job.

Our coaching staff is the 2nd problem as others have done a good job of showing in this thread. The only position coaches worthy of coaching at Clemson are Reed/Eason and maybe Riley but it’s hard to tell with Riley bc he’s not being allowed to do things his way. Literally every other assistant or GA we have had NO business even sniffing the sidelines at Clemson.

These 2 things are the biggest problems and it’s causing a domino effect down the line and turning everything into their own smaller problems.

Until Dabo hires assistants worthy of coaching at Clemson and he truly starts to use the portal to supplement weak spots on the roster we’re going to continue to get what we see now every week.

The bottom line is Dabo has not just not adapted… he’s flat out doubled down and refuses to change and adapt in the ways that are needed to compete for national championships in todays college football world.

I think he still thinks its mostly about himself. Remember his response several times a couple years back when he said things like “If thats the kind of criticism he gets, he might just go somewhere else and coach?” I think he was being truthful. He’s done alot, but now, coaches see that Clemson is a winning destination and I believe many guys would want to be here with something to prove, which Dabo is obviously saying he does not.

There are 5 active coaches who’ve won a National Championship. There are 3 who have won more than one. We have one of those. There are a dozen programs to have won as many or more national championships than Clemson has in the AP poll era college that don’t have an active coach who has won a championship. They all have equal or greater program history. They all have equal or more money. And they hire coaches “with something to prove” at a blistering pace and the thing they all have in common is that they not only don’t win titles - they rarely even elevate their teams to prominence.

I guess most major college coaches would be complacent if that was the case. Saban, Kirby, Kiffin, Day and I could go on make millions. These guys are a different breed. They want to win championships and Dabo is no different.

I understand we are in a funk as a program and there is most certainly some internal issues but Dabo being complacent is not one of my main concerns personally. I believe folks like him if complacent would find something else to do.
