this....
For us old timers that still remember the good old days. I will always cherish those memories
MEMORIES
Remember Slow Food? 'Someone asked the other day,
'What was your favorite fast food
when you were growing up?'
'We didn't have fast food when
I was growing up, I informed him. 'All the food was slow.'
'C'mon, seriously.
Where did you eat?'
'It was a place called 'at Home,'' I explained. !
'Mom cooked every day and when
Dad got home from work, we sat
down together at the dining room
table, and if I didn't like what she
put on my plate I was allowed to
sit there until I did like it.'
By this time, the kid was laughing
so hard I was afraid he was going
to suffer serious internal damage,
so I didn't tell him the part about
how I had to have permission to
leave the table.
But here are some other things
I would have told him about my
childhood if I figured his system
could have handled it :
Some parents NEVER owned their
own house, never wore Levis,
never set foot on a golf course,
never traveled out of the country
or had a credit card.
In their later years they had something
called a revolving charge card.
The card was good only at Sears Roebuck.
Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore.
Maybe he died.
My parents never drove me to
soccer practice.
This was mostly because we never
had heard of soccer.
I had a bicycle that weighed probably
50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow) We didn't have a television
in our house until I was 11.
It was, of course, black and white,
and the station went off the air at midnight,
after playing the national anthem and
a poem about God;
it came back on the air at about 6 a.m.
And there was usually a locally produced
news and farm show on, featuring local people.
I was 19 before I tasted my first pizza,
it was called 'pizza pie.'
When I bit into it, I burned the roof of
my mouth and the cheese slid off,
swung down,
plastered itself against my chin
and burned that, too.
It's still the best pizza I ever had.
I never had a telephone in my room.
The only phone in the house was
in the living room and it was on
a party line.
Before you could dial, you had to listen
and make sure some people
you didn't know weren't already
using the line.
Pizzas were not delivered to our home.
But milk was.
All newspapers were delivered by boys
and all boys delivered newspapers --
my brother delivered a newspaper,
six days a week.
It cost 7 cents a paper,
of which he got to keep 2 cents.
He had to get up at 6 AM every morning.
OnSaturday, he had to collect
the 42 cents from his customers.
His favorite customers were the ones who
gave him 50 cents and told him to
keep the change.
His least favorite customers were
the ones who seemed to never
be home on collection day.
Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut.
At least, they did in the movies.
There were no movie ratings because
all movies were responsibly produced
for everyone to enjoy viewing,
without profanity
or violence or most anything offensive.
If you grew up in a generation before
there was fast food,
you may want to share some of these
memories with your children or grandchildren
Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing.
Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?
MEMORIES from a friend :
My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house
(she died in December) and he brought me an
old Royal Crown Cola bottle.
In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch
of holes in it.
I knew immediately what it was,
but my daughter had no idea.
She thought they had tried to make it
a salt shaker or something.
I knew it as the bottle that sat on the
end of the ironing board to
'sprinkle' clothes with because we
didn't have steam irons.
Man, I am old.
How many do you remember?
Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.
Ignition switches on the dashboard.
Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall.
Real ice boxes.
Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.
Using hand signals for cars without turn signals.
Older Than Dirt Quiz :
Count all the ones that you remember not the ones you were told about. Ratings at the bottom.
1. Blackjack chewing gum
2. Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water 3. Candy cigarettes
4. Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles
5. Coffee shops or diners with table side jukeboxes 6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers
7. Party lines on the telephone
8 Newsreels before the movie
9. P.F. Flyers
10. Butch wax (that was our hair product)
11.. TV test patterns that came on at night
after the last show and were there until
TV shows started again in the morning.
(there were only 3 channels...
[if you were fortunate )
12. Peashooters
13. Howdy Doody
14. 45 RPM records
15.S&H green stamps
16. Hi-fi's
17. Metal ice trays with lever

19. Blue flashbulb
20. Packards
21. Roller skate keys
22. Cork popguns
23. Drive-ins
24. Studebakers
25. Wash tub wringers
If you remembered 0-5 = You're still young If you remembered 6-10 = You are getting older If you remembered 11-15 = Don't tell your age, If you remembered 16-25 = You' re older than dirt!

My dad was in flaying out of Southern Italy during latter part of WWII. When I had my first pizza from a shop as probably a 10 year old I asked how did it compare with theirs. He said h never saw any pizza there. In fact he said the Italians barely had anything to eat during those days.

I am older than dirt even though I just turned 60 but was flattered when I was told I look 45 to 50. I should have paid these people for the compliment. I know of all but one of them. Those were great great times.
The young people do not realize what social media has done to them. Kids are suffering from anxiety, depression, envy, lack of patience, they get into debt to keep up with their friends, have no idea what a simple life is like, the blessings from having close knit neighborhoods, and family reunions. Technology is good in some ways but overall I think it has added to more stress in life.
Life was great before cell phones Laptops and GPS.

I'm older than dirt, but I already knew that. You left out being the tv channel changer (remote control for you younger whipper snappers) for your parents when you finally did get a tv. My grandmother had a Studebaker. That car was built like a tank.

Spud, your comment about the pizza reminded me of one

of my fondest memories of my time at Clemson. There were about a half dozen of my high school class who made Clemson their college of choice. This was 1972. We checked in, moved in, registered for classes, attended those first classes, and then came our first college weekend.
Downtown Clemson in those days featured at least two well known watering holes, one being The Red Carpet Lounge, which is now Tiger Town Tavern. The other was the original Study Hall restaurant and bar. That first Friday evening, our hometown group found ourselves at a table upstairs at the Study Hall, where we ordered pitchers of beer, and awaited the first of several large pepperoni pizza orders.
The beer was ice cold, and just like you said, Spud, that big ole cheesy, greasy pepperoni pizza was the best I have ever tasted. It was our rite of passage, out on our own, college men, eating and drinking and making our own way in the world at last. If I could go back and do it all over, I wouldn't change a thing.

Not as old as some of you, but my family was poor...so the "improvements" that occurred, came later in our life because we could not afford the new fangled inventions! I remembered ALL of the items on the list!

Thanks Spud, for a trip down memory lane. I remember them all. Packard --"Ask the man who owns One" and I owned a "Needle Nosed" Studebaker. And I remember the Maxwell and Overland as well as the Model "T" Ford and the Cord plus others that barely made it out of the starting gate. Some of the younger guys may even remember the Edsel.
Contrary to what some may report, we did have "fast food" back in those dark ages. If we were lucky we were able to kill a squirrel or rabbit for a meal.

Safest bet you’ve ever made . . . Perfect Score!!!
Nov 10, 2020, 4:09 PM

The best line was, “and if I didn’t like what she put in front of me . . . I got to sit there until I did” . . . Perfect!!!
Best days of my life!!!!!!!
Oh . . . and number 18 smelled soooo good!!!!!!!
Once we got the tv, seemed like I was always the one dad asked to adjust the “rabbit ears” . . .
I hated it when the picture only came in clear enough to view when you were touching those things . . . made for some uncomfortable viewing!
“Fast Food” for me was an extra baked potato, cut in half lengthwise, salted and rewrapped in its original “tin foil” and stuck in my pocket to carry to the ballpark for lunch in between pickup games of baseball that lasted all day, every Saturday!!!

I remember all except the BlackJack chewing gum and the Butch Wax. I assume the wax was a product for men. I am one of 4 girls with no bothers. I have one to add: transistor radios. We had three TV stations on a black and white TV. My grandparents were the first people we knew with a color TV. We drove the 100 miles from Charleston to Columbia to watch that TV! Yes, I am older than dirt!!

who are old enough to remember what music was like in the last couple of years BEFORE The Beatles hit and those who are younger. You just can't explain to someone who didn't live it just what a change their music (and on their heels, the rest of the "British Invasion") brought.

Only 50 but just two points from “older than dirt”. Grew up country as you can get in Darlington. Our 3rd TV channel was PBS as there wasn’t an ABC affiliate that the foil linked rabbit ears would pick up until I was in HS. Pot belly wood stove for heat. No AC. Spent my summers cutting up logs for the winter as David mentions lol. Wouldn’t trade it for anything. One thing my kids couldn’t fathom was having to get up to change channels.

I don’t really consider myself as “older than dirt” as I’m “just” a bit over 50 but looks like I am based on this...
1. Blackjack chewing gum - I’ve had it as a nostalgia later but no 2. Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water - of course 3. Candy cigarettes - yep, and gum one that blew “smoke” 4. Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles - yep 5. Coffee shops or diners with table side jukeboxes - yes 6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers - no 7. Party lines on the telephone - no 8 Newsreels before the movie - yes, some of them were pretty good 9. P.F. Flyers - these were chuck Taylor Converses to me 10. Butch wax (that was our hair product) - nope 11.. TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning. (there were only 3 channels... [if you were fortunate ) - yes but there were 4 channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, & PBS) 12. Peashooters - NO 13. Howdy Doody - Yes but these were “reruns” 14. 45 RPM records - yes 15.S&H green stamps - Yes 16. Hi-fi's - not the music group but yes on the stereo systems 17. Metal ice trays with lever - yes 18. Mimeograph paper - yes 19. Blue flashbulb - yes 20. Packards - no 21. Roller skate keys - yep 22. Cork popguns - no 23. Drive-ins - yes 24. Studebakers - No 25. Wash tub wringers - didn’t use one but saw them
