Recent news story about sign stealing! Has that always been a rule.? I always thought that was a part of the game.
Several years ago this became a baseball story when the catchers signals were observed by cameras in the outfield.
Even that is difficult for me to understand!

Sign stealing isn’t filming your opponents signs then matching them with all of their plays. Sign stealing is figuring out during game that’s why it usually takes a quarter or two before the good ones can figure them out. It’s like taking a test with the answer sheet beside you there’s zero guess work. I don’t get what people don’t understand.

Football rules plainly state that when a team’s offense is calling or signaling their play in, the defensive team must close their eyes and put their fingers in their ears.

I agree. But a lot of people are not understanding what stealing signs really means. For example: if every time your opponent holds up a sign of Minnie Mouse they run a QB sneak, are you stealing their sign or just being observant? In game stealing of signs is perfectly legal ( try and explain that to a coot). As much game film as teams watch on each other I don’t see how they can help but figure out an opponents signs. Maybe teams should smarten up and change signs every quarter or even more often. It’s really kind of stupid to keep using the same signs over and over.

If you record a game on TV, you will see plenty of hand signs and picture signs being given. Is it illegal for Dabo to tape games on TV and then watch the replay?
I remember a game not too long ago when the coots were so paranoid about Clemson stealing their signs that they had Jake Bentley run too the side line after every play so they could whisper the play in his ear. How did that work out for them?
Knowing what the play is and stopping it are two different things. I actually think a lot of griping about sign stealing is sour grapes. You will notice that the winning team never complains.

So when you record a game on TV they have every single signal made the entire game for you to sync up with the plays makes sense

When I was coaching basketball and scouting . . do you think I paid attention and wrote down what the team did when they called play 3? or such??

If you have zero integrity when it comes to beating a team within the rules of course it wouldn’t bother you. But to act like what they did is within the rules is hilarious. This isn’t recruiting or any of that shady business this is direct in game cheating.

Every team attempts to steal signs, not every team has a print out of the opponents signs

So maybe you can steal signs on gameday but you can't go to a game the week before and then match up signals with plays by watching film? Baseball coaches change signs all the time, so why can't football coaches? As far as basketball goes, every opponent knows what you are doing because they are basically running the same plays but they just have a different name for those plays.

Had always thought coaches changed things up weekly.
If you can pick them up on game day more power to you but don’t buy tickets to film the sidelines of future opposition, or pay other teams to do it for you. Screams stupid. May go on more than we know but the first I had heard of it.
